Can I just say first that it's incredibly cool, the number of people I've never heard of (as if that were some credible standard) who posted stuff to shrift's b-day present? Fics and icons and just "you rock" messages. And Amazon book reviews. And filk. And limericks. I'm very glad I'm not big name enough to get that kind of attention, but seeing it pour in for someone who (imo) deserves all of it gave me a warm fuzzy about fandom as a whole.
The following is a not very scientific sampling of the fic stuff I *really* liked. There were a lot of fandoms I don't read, and more in these fandoms was posted, (and it's entirely possible that I missed a couple) so go look your ownself: slounger
Things Alchemical, a Firefly fic by veejane - It's grumpy!Mal and weird!River, but hey, I already said it was Firefly fic, didn't I? Lyrical and true. (Also? Firearms! Woo hoo!)
She Watches by voleuse - Multiple fandoms. A set of snippets. *Nicely* done - and the Firefly one has firearms, too! Spare and nearly perfect fractions of the shows in question.
Adventures in Retail - Melymbrosia untrue_accounts did three ficlets (multiple fandoms) on work. Or finance. Or the like. At any rate, they're funny and cute. And there is both Rygel and Cordy!
Not to Keep by iphignia939 was, I think, one of the best offerings. (To my taste, not talking for the queen of snark herself.) Lost, Boone and Shannon, three years after, through the eyes of their (step)mother.
A SportsNight Conversationby forodwaith - All I'm going to say is that this is great SN, and it could have been a 1st season WW fic, it's that witty.
Five first line ficlets by suelac Multiple fandoms. I liked the Buffy ones the best - the last one put me right back into the dark and demon-filled world of Hellboy, a mind-shift that might not work for everyone, but I was delighted.
Sharpe's Price by gritkitty - Sharpe's Rifles. It's Sharpe and Harper and the intimate distance of rank and tramping through the countryside and it's damn near perfect.
Merricat, Said Constance, by yhlee Angel. Angel, having tea. Someplace...else. Someplace Alice might recognize. Wonderful, lyrical.
Sotto Voce, by thassalia. Firefly Wow. Thea wrote Mal and River and Simon, clear and muddled and so sharp it hurts. NC-17, and not for days when you feel like hell already. But if you're looking for fic to make you bleed, try this one.
In the same vein - rubberneck wrote Amok Time - a Farscape John and Harvey fic that is...well. Twisted and wrong and true. Spoilers for Season 4. But if you've watched S4, and you like your fic on the darkly warped (rather than the funny warped) menu, go, read.
