Anyone know this book?

Published *about* twenty years ago. (Paperback only?) YA, Sword and Sorcery, young man must revenge/rescue/redeem his family/his village against an evil overlord. Along the way he is schooled by a yoda-ish swordsmaster and tames a wild black horse. The title was the young man's name - Tuoak? Tovak? and the young man was dark-skinned.

Part of his lessons included pouring water from hand to hand.

We were talking about "books we read as kids that changed our lives" this morning and it's making me nuts that I still can't remember this one. Google is not helping. (Although it did lead me to this CJ Cherryh artwork page.)

A note: it is entirely possible that the novel really wasn't that good. It just hit me at a time when I was transitioning from only loving stories where the hero lived *and* won *and* wasn't an ass *and* got the girl/got the boy to stories with somewhat less positive outcomes. But I remember liking it even as I was struggling with the more mature elements.

(Sorry for spamming - it appears to be that kind of day.)
