Yunho falls asleep cuddled up to Changmin (because Bambi was accidentally dropped outside into the dirt right before bedtime and is now hung to dry in the laundry room by the ears), lulled to sleep by the extra warmth in his bed, and wakes up five hours later to a very agitated, very cold Changmin shaking his shoulder.

“Hyung,” he says, not letting go of him even when he’s clearly awake. “Hyung, my skin is cold.”

Now, Yunho’s always tried his hardest to be a good leader and a good brotherly figure, but it’s hard to think straight or see a crisis when he’s just been pulled out of stage 3 sleep, so he doesn’t think much of what Changmin is telling him.

“Just put on a sweater and cuddle closer,” he slurs, barely keeping his eyes open. So far, Changmin has been pretending to look calm and composed, but the panic that was previously only in his voice is becoming clearly evident.

“No, hyung, I’m not feeling cold. My body temperature is unnaturally low and I’ve been freaking out for an hour and you know how warm I can get when I’m nervous but I’m still as cold!”

Things start to piece together like Lego blocks in Yunho’s mind and he sits up with a start, grabbing Changmin’s wrist so fast the other complains about him almost pulling his arm out of its socket, feeling his hand, his fingers, the inside of his forearm. So far, nothing new (but that doesn’t make it any more reassuring): Changmin’s skin, by human standards, is much too cold.

He’s quickly pulled out of bed by a worried Yunho, and soon the five of them are piled into the kitchen: Changmin is sitting at the counter while Jaejoong makes soup and turns the heat until it’s almost boiling, Yoochun is making coffee with bleary eyes (it’s hard to tell whether he’s doing it to survive Yunho’s screeching or to warm Changmin up), and Junsu is sitting next to Changmin, absorbed behind his laptop.

And Yunho, aside from panicking and pacing, gets the bright idea to grab a thermometer from the bathroom and shove it into Changmin’s mouth.

“I’m Googling low body temperature,” Junsu pipes up, as if expecting to become everyone’s saviour.

Changmin doesn’t miss a beat to correct him around the thermometer. “Try thermoregulation.”

The timer on Yunho’s watch beeps at the same time as Yoochun places a mug of coffee in front of the youngest, already drinking from his own, and Changmin takes the thermometer out of his mouth to look at the results. Before he can, though, Yunho snatches it out of his hands.

“Thirty-three,” he announces, before reaching forward to squeeze Changmin in his arms like he’s about to die.

“According to Wikipedia, you should be blue right now,” he says and glances at Changmin, whose skin colour isn’t any different than usual. He reads further along, and then punches his shoulder without warning.

“Ow! What is wrong with you?”

“You should be unresponsive to certain stimuli and have depressed reflexes.”

“So he’s basically fine,” Jaejoong deadpans, scooping vegetable potage into a bowl and setting it in front of Changmin. “Eat, maybe this’ll work.”

“It’s six in the morning, hyung.”

“Eat it.”

They argue for a minute or two (Jaejoong wins in the end) as a petrified Yunho watches and Yoochun grabs the laptop, turning it around to have a look. He wordlessly types a few words, scrolls, clicks, scrolls some more, and decides to add his five cents.

“That’s about the body temperature of an American alligator, Changmin-ah.”

“I always knew he was a reptile,” Junsu says knowingly, and Yoochun pats his head.

Again, Yunho grabs Changmin’s wrist and pulls him back upstairs, forcing him into bed and taking off his shirt before reaching for Changmin’s, who quickly protests, spluttering a little.

“What are you doing?” he asks with wide eyes.

“It’s survival stuff,” Yunho answers seriously, using the initial shock to pull Changmin’s shirt off him and lie down next to him, covering them both with a blanket before pressing his chest to Changmin’s. “Works best skin to skin.”

“Well, this is awkward,” Changmin says. It’s a lot different than just spooning while still fully clothed and waking up not even touching each other. But soon enough, even though he doesn’t feel his own temperature go up, Yunho’s makes him feel a bit more comfortable, and he whispers his thanks softly.

Up until now, Yunho looked like he’d fallen back asleep, but he opens his eyes to look at Changmin with a soft smile, worry still clear in his eyes. “Tell me if you need me to call an ambulance.”

“I’m fine.”

“Says the one who woke me up looking completely panicked.”

“Says the one who’s been completely panicked since he woke up even though I’ve calmed down.”

“You’re beyond hypothermia; I think I’m allowed to panic.”

“Only temperature-wise.”

“I still worry,” Yunho says softly.

“You’re always worrying about us.” With the look Yunho gives him, Changmin feels like he needs to make a correction, a spot in his chest slowly warming up. “You worry about me a little more than anyone else?”

“Guilty.” He smiles, and they don’t need anything more to give each other the signal-later, Changmin will argue that Yunho kissed him first, and he’ll just nod and agree, letting him have this one under the pretense that he was probably just confused because of his body temperature.

They don’t hear Jaejoong coming to check on Changmin before going back to bed until he opens the door abruptly, arching a perfectly shaped eyebrow and looking at them completely unimpressed.

“So I’m guessing you’ve taken on the job to warm Changmin up?”

The only answer he gets is a middle finger proudly standing (Changmin) and a hand trying to diplomatically wave him off (Yunho), all this without breaking the kiss.

“So I can go to bed instead of calling an ambulance after I’ve reassured Yoochun that Changmin isn’t dead?”

He barely ducks the flying object that comes at his head
