I'm trying to be positive about XXXHolic's conclusion, but I must admit I found it rather disapointing. Because nothing much actually happened. I am happy for Watanuki that Yuuko has finally jerked him out of being an idiot and 'freed' him from the shop, and I guess that's what you would call a happy ending. But fact is, nothing happened besides that. Even Watanuki and Yuuko's reunien wasn't as touching and emotional as I thought it would be. I had hoped for Watanuki crying and atleast a hug shared between them but, no, they never even touched. I can't remember if Watanuki ever even said 'goodbye' to her. This was the scene that we had been waiting for ever since Yuuko's death, and it was just....flat. I'd been looking foward to a dramatic, emotional finale, but that wasn't what we got.
And was it just me or did Yuuko not really seem that much like Yuuko 0.0 ?
The ending confused me a little though. So that's Doumeki's great-grandson we see at the end, and a hundred years have passed. So is this Watanuki recalling this 90 years in to the future to Doumeki's great-grandspawn, or has this happened just now, and the 'Doumeki' we have been seeing throughout Rou has really been the various generations of Doumeki spawn 0.0 ?
And with the revelation that Doumeki has gone on to have a child, presumably with a wife or partner (unless Watanuki has something he wants to tell us), the Douwata pairing is officially shot down. I can't say I was that sad, as although I am devoted to this pairing, as I had guessed that were not going to end up with a Douwata pairing in the end. As long as we don't find out it was Kohane, I'm happy. I feel sorry for Watanuki being all alone though. Maybe he was in love with Yuuko-san afterall? Maybe being in love with her memory is good enough for him.
And so the eggs power was to remove Watanuki's memories of Yuuko? And the decision hard Doumeki had to make was whether to remove Watanuki's memories of Yuuko in order for him to get over her? But in the end, he decided it would be crueler to remove them. Seems like a good enough explanation to me. I can't help but think it would have been more interesting and exciting if he had, though. And so now, Watanuki is about 117 years old? Wow. I thought he would only live a normal lifespan, just not age physically, and just drop down dead randomly when he reached 96 or whatever. Seems he has a lengthened lifespan too. It must have been sad for him seeing Doumeki, Himawari-chan and Kohane dying. But thinking of that is making me too sad too so I'll move on.
So there ends the manga that first introduced me to CLAMP, and I have been following devotedly for more than 3 years. I will miss XXXHolic greatly, and I am sad to see it over, as well as having to say goodbye to the characters I've loved so much. However, CLAMP ambiguosly wrote on their website that XXXHolic was now over......for now, so maybe we will get to see Watanuki again sometime in the future.....
