Oh, I hate those 'Canon-XXX is AWFUL!! MY headcanon-XXX is WAY better than Himaruya's D:!!' whines. It puts a damper on the excitement of the introduction of a new character. Plus it's just petty. It usually simply translates as 'the character didn't turn out how *I* personally imagined them as, thus it's awful'. Himaruya isn't psychic, and he doesn't share your opinion on how a character 'should' be portrayed and that characters personality. If you don't like how *he* choose to portray *his* character, then suck it up. The worst thing is when people threaten to 'leave' the fandom because of the 'awfullness' of a new character. Which is just childish, illogical, and utterly ridiculous.

And I hate the 'male vs female' arguments as well. 'OMG, ROMANIA WILL NEVER BE THE SAME BECAUSE HE'S A GUUUUUUUUUUYYYYY D,:!!'. Why does what tackle a character posesses make such an almighty difference to their character? And then there are those people *warring* over whether NZ is male or female. It's just dumb. If those people have the time to fight about such petty things, they should get a hobby.

I remember the wank Romania got, which was depressing because Romania is an eccentric cutie. (Unknown at the time, but to hate him when he had hardly any personality? Alright, his hat looks funny...no it does, but his personality is literally me, don't insult him you're hurting me T.T)

I don't think the gender of a character should make such a difference. They'll have their individual personalities, and we can certainly work with them. This fandom is good at going in depth with all these one-dimensional characters! Well actually, female characters do tend to be brushed aside for the hot men. That's a downside, for certain.

I like to ponder about the life the female characters have had to live because of the fact that women have been second-class throughout history. Imagining how they operated around their human subjects in a world ruled by men is interesting to think about.

I like Romania too. It's weird all the wank he got, considering how little of his personality we *actually* got to see.

Agreed. I think the pretty significant male/female divide in Hetalia, much like Hetalia's portrayal of Korea, or *that* Chibitalia strip, is the subject of an awful lot of whitewashing in fandom. There is, roughly, only one female character to 6 male characters, and that is a pretty size-able under-representation of women in the manga. I can understand that, as a guy, it's probably much easier for Himaruya to create male characters than female ones, but still, especially when you consider that, more than just characters, they represent *nations*, that's a pretty notable discrepency, and I certainly agree there needs to be more female characters. That's not to the point where I would start a hate campaign against a new character though, purely because he happens to have a penis 0.0.

And that is a really intesting idea, and you do have to think about that. I wonder how they would have? That would be an interesting subject for a fanfiction.
