The Snake and the Moon

Medusa ran into Kami in the coffee shop across from Shibusen somewhat unexpectedly, a day or two after the uneventful second double-date. For once, it was nothing the witch had planned; she merely had a particular fondness for one of the specialty drinks of the place, one of the things she knew she'd miss when she had finished her research. She hadn't known that Kami had a love of the place, as well.
If they'd not been a meister and a witch, officially natural enemies, it would have been quite different. Medusa felt a touch of regret that they were, as it was. Kami was fun to talk with, and rather informative about Spirit and Stein.
Kami had already had a weapon, a Polish war scythe who rather lacked a sense of humor about it, by the time Spirit had started at Shibusen. She'd felt a bit sorry for him; meisters like Stein, who were compatible with a wide range of weapons, were rare enough, but weapons? For most, unless they became a death scythe, or managed to catch the rare example of the more widely-compatible meisters needing a partner…they would not get more than a single chance at finding a meister.
That was why, after all, weapons were to protect their meisters with their lives: only one had a good chance of ever finding a new partner.
Kami had never had the heart to tell Spirit that she'd checked him, once, during a rough spot with her pole-arm. (Not, she assured Medusa, due to any jokes about Poles.) It was during Spirit's first month, and it had seemed to her then that she might need a new weapon soon, so… It was done without Spirit being aware, and…
Kami had a rather giggle-inducing blush.
Medusa knew her cover story, which was actually mostly the truth; it was easier to trim out the inconvenient bits than have to remember the right lies when asked. So 'family of witches & disposable males' became instead one that had an unspecified objection to Shinigami-sama. There were enough, and anybody from those groups would of course be uncomfortable talking about it in Death City.
It didn't hurt, of course, that most of the other questions would be quite easily given answers as well. It was rather rare for somebody to manage to attend Shibusen without some adult relative's knowledge, and approval. Somebody whose family objected so firmly would never be able to attend.
Stein, from what anybody knew, was an exception. Nobody knew about his family, and he certainly hadn't seemed to tell anybody nor show any sign of wanting to visit home. Spirit had just found him one day, and…
It had been rather like the stereotypical method of obtaining a dog, except Spirit had gotten a meister, instead. One who, so far, had tended to date rather older men.
It was at this point that Kami and Medusa found out that they had an additional thing in common…
I'm not sure if this is a breather chapter or what, but hopefully the next will cooperate and be out soon.
