Prologue

MIURA HARUMA

First day of school for me… I got a seat beside someone named Takaki Yuya. He had this bad boy image that made me a little uncomfortable at first. I didn’t look at him and felt very awkward. He looked at me and we made eye contact.

“Takaki Yuya desu! Hajimemashite!” He said with a big smile and a peace sign.

I didn’t see that coming. I thought this guy was a bully that would scare the guts of me anytime soon. But ironically, he is an overgrown five year old royalty. He kept me company and we became good friends.

At around lunch, just after Takaki and I brought out our food, there was this guy who entered our classroom. He was, I guess, our classmate. He arrived at lunch? Wow, he is so late. He didn’t seem to be bothered by his tardiness as he walked to the empty seat beside Takaki.

As he placed his bag on the chair, Takaki turned to him and screamed which such glee, “Yabu-kun!” He was dead cheerful.

‘Yabu-kun’ smiled at Takaki who returned a death hug. I was quite worried this guy would breakdown from Takaki’s squeeze. Gratefully, the guy lived. He laughed at Takaki’s weird ways and turned to me.

“Hi, there.” He said with a welcoming smile. “Yabu Kouta desu.”

“Miura Haruma desu.”

He grabbed a seat between Takaki and me. He sat down and started a conversation. I could see how close the two were. They acted as if they haven’t seen each other for a long time. Even with such bond, they didn’t make me feel the least awkward and didn’t leave me out of the conversation. As it turned out, Yabu has been absent for three days which is why Takaki missed him so much. They were really close friends and lunch ended with Takaki leaving his bento untouched.

At dismissal, Yabu introduced me to two of his friends as Takaki left to get something.

“Yaotome Hikaru desu!” said one of them. He seemed to be the joker of the group.

“Arioka Daiki desu!” said the other holding up a peace sign.

“Hajimemashite! Dozo yoroshiku!” They said in unison.

Daiki and Hikaru were also very friendly. They were easy to get along with. It wasn’t long before I was laughing alongside with them with one of Hikaru’s corny jokes. Hikaru was in the middle of telling us about Daiki’s height problem and how it was related to Pocky when I saw someone. I saw HER - that girl in that train to Chiba.

“Ano…” I said. “Who’s she?”

“Her?” Daiki was just too happy to change the subject and asked as he gestured her way. “She’s… uh…”

“Isn’t she Matsumoto-sensei’s sister?” Hikaru brought out three yellow balls and started joggling them playfully.

“Yeah.” Takaki replied as he approached us. “She’s Kiru. I think.”

“Takaki-kun, finally you’re back!” Yabu said exasperatedly. “What took you so long?”

I could sense that Yabu was avoiding something. I just couldn’t understand what and why. But I couldn’t drop the topic about this ‘Kiru’ and I wanted to know more.

“Kiru?” I asked Takaki.

It was Yabu who answered, “Matsumoto-sensei introduced her to me one time…” He said coolly. “She’s Matsumoto Kiru, the younger and only sister of the Biology teacher Matsumoto-sensei… Year 2.”

“Oh… I see…” I replied.

So that’s her name…

“Why? You met her or something?” Hikaru asked as he poked my sides. I didn’t notice he already stopped playing with those yellow balls. “Are you interested in her?”

“No!” I replied too quickly. I swear I saw Hikaru’s mouth twitched to a smirk for a second there.

I turned away and looked back at Kiru. She really looks a lot like the girl on that train but somehow she’s not the same person… The one I saw on that train was expressionless which is why I remembered her in the first place. This girl, this Kiru, is so different. She didn’t have that poker face. Instead, she’s very energetic and all hyped up. And I could see that she truly is enjoying herself. She’s talking to her friends and mimicking one of them just for the fun of it. She has this huge smile on her face that depicts her genuine emotions.

“You’re staring at her.” Daiki whispered to my ear.

“No, I’m not.” I faced him and he raised a brow. I knew I wasn’t going to win this argument so I changed the topic. “Does she have a twin?”

“A twin?” That was the last thing he expected to hear from me. “I don’t think so… I mean, Matsumoto-sensei would’ve mentioned it if he had twins for siblings. And Yabu-kun said Matsumoto-sensei only has one sibling - her.” He replied with a smile.

We walked a room and changed to our outdoor shoes when Yabu’s phone rang. He checked the caller’s name and excused himself. I noticed that his face became slightly serious when he checked who was calling him but it didn’t seem to bother the others. We waited for him at the hallway as he took the call away from people with his back on us. It looked as if the others were used to it.

“Maa~” Daiki suddenly said… “Yabu-kun’s absent tomorrow again…” He sighed.

“Aren’t you still used to it, Dai-chan?” Takaki asked but sighed.

“What’s going on?” I asked. “Does Yabu-kun usually skip school?”

Hikaru nodded. “Yabucchi is usually absent. Since he’s grades are oh-so high, the teachers don’t really mind.”

I was about to ask why but Yabu returned with a soft smile on his face. I noticed that he was hiding his excitement for something. There was something behind that sweet smile. I doubt others saw it.

“Minna, I’m-“

“Not going to school tomorrow?” Takaki guessed.

He nodded. Everyone sighed.

“Till when?” Daiki asked.

“I don’t really know. Hopefully not longer than three days…” He replied.

There was this expression on his face that the others didn’t see through. Yup, he’s definitely hiding something.

Deep in the night, on the top floor of the most inconspicuous building in Tokyo, different units are planning, strategies are being formulated and chosen agents are being briefed as the mission is assigned to the most trustworthy agent.

She didn’t have to make an impression and her father’s name didn’t go ahead of her. She astonished everyone with her skills and proved herself worthy to be the heir of the Agency.

“You mustn’t tell anyone.” The Head told her in a tone full of authority.

“I am fully aware of the protocol.” She replied. “You know be better than that, father.”

“Yes. I do.” He replied with a sly grin, “What I am saying is that you cannot tell him.”

She knew who he meant, “Why not?”

“This is classified information, daughter. I believe you know that.”

“His position in this Agency is almost equal mine, and you say he doesn’t have the necessary experience to handle this, yet newcomer Ichihara is fully brief and being assigned as backup.” She pointed out. “What is so special about this mission that even he has to be kept in the dark? Why did you assign another partner for him in the Igura case when it was our case?”

“Good observation.” Her father simply said.

“You didn’t answer the question.”

“All in good time.” He said and ended the conversation. “Kamenashi has the information you need. Start immediately. You may go.”

She knew he would not say anything else. She nodded and left the room.
