Poor plots, all gone to waste… They all have to wait for the next Valentines… unless I think of something… Oh well… Here’s another fic for you Audrey. Dōzo.
Disclaimer: I own nothin’ but the plot.
HINO REI
Since I had gotten over with my previous boyfriend, Jun, I had felt free once again. Jun and I were, well, let’s just say it didn’t work out. It’s not because he cheated on me or something… It’s just, well, I don’t really know what happened.
My friends helped me a whole lot. Eiko was this cheerful one who never failed to put a smile on my face and Saeko, in both her stealth and crazy ways, comforted me. Their presence always helped me thought tough times and well, now, thanks to them, I am more than okay.
It has been some time since our breakup and I can also see that he has also gotten over me. It wasn’t awkward to talk to him anymore. I treat him as a special friend and I think it is mutual.
“Masquerade?”
“Yeah.” Saeko replied.
“When?” I asked.
“Friday the 13th.” Eiko said in a supposedly scary face.
“Cloud said it’s an open party so we can go…” Saeko said in a happy tone. Well, Cloud’s name always does that to her. “So, are you coming?”
“Sure.” I replied. “Who else are going?”
“Cloud.” Saeko sang. “He’s one of the organizers.”
“And he’s also going.” Eiko said as her smile nearly reached her ears as she blushed.
By ‘he’, she didn’t mean Cloud nor Jun. She meant her boyfriend. The tall one.
Yep, I’m the only single one in our circle, but well, I don’t think I’m ready for some lovin’ right now.

“I didn’t know there’ll be this many people…” I commented blankly as we reached the party.
There were a lot of people and as a rule, everyone wore a mask. I took mine out and slipped it on. Eiko did the same but Saeko looked at the crowd with worried eyes.
“Rei-chan, you’re right.” She said. “There are a lot of people. A lot more than what I expected. I better find Cloud. He might need help.”
She took off and ran in to the thick crowd and disappeared. Eiko and I didn’t exactly find this weird or rude. Since Saeko and Cloud got together, she would slip out all of a sudden and this was just one of those days. Eiko and I walked to the gathered people then looked around.
It was altogether fun but I found myself alone when Eiko’s boyfriend popped out of nowhere. I walked to the table and grabbed myself a drink.
“Hey, there.”
I turned and found myself face to face with a random guy who was wearing an eye mask so I couldn’t see half his face but I could see he has really beautiful eyes.
“Hi.” I said simply, not too snobbish but not too friendly. “Sup?”
“Nothin’ much.”
“You alone too?”
“Yeah…” he replied with a sigh. “My friend took off somewhere.”
“Wow, same here.” I replied, amused by having the similar circumstances with this handsome stranger.
“Well, maybe we can… Well, maybe we can keep each other company, ne?” he offered. “Unless, your boyfriend’s gonna get jealous…”
“I’m single.” I pointed out.
“Someone like you, single?” he shook his head. “That sounds impossible. No one of interest?”
Hmmm… This is an interesting question.
“Well, none. I think.” I smiled. “The ‘keeping each other company’ offer still open?”
“Yeah.” He smiled and took a sip from his punch.
MASKED GUY
She’s interesting. Whoever she is, she’s really interesting. I think I’m starting to like her. But, well, I’m not sure yet.
I’m so happy my name and the familiarity of my face didn’t go ahead of me. I don’t think she finally figured out who I am, which I think is a good thing. It’s great to know that she doesn’t know who she’s talking to and the fact that my identity isn’t revealed, making me just one of the ordinary people living in an ordinary world without much eyes staring back. The excitement of a mask…
I led her outside to a bench so we can actually talk to each other without having to raise our voices. She was so beautiful. Her walk, how she carries herself, and even just how she opens and closes her eyes as she blinks, everything about her is mesmerizing. Even if she has her eye mask on, I can see how striking her eyes are. They’re just so captivating. Everything about her has somehow grabbed my attention.
HINO REI
He’s so… Well, I don’t know. I don’t really know… I mean, hey, I don’t know the guy but somehow, he brings so much comfort and well, I haven’t felt anything close to this since Jun and I broke up. And this guy is obviously not Jun. That I know.
Jun is cockier and ‘cocky’ is the last thing that can be used to describe this guy. Jun’s lips are also fuller while his was well, less full, although, as kissable.
WAIT! What am I thinking?! Kissable?! Have I gone mad?! I’m not even sure if I’m ready for love again… But he’s aura is so comforting and relaxing. It’s like he’s unconsciously releasing ‘peace’ in his surroundings and I’m sucking all of it since we’re just the only ones here. I don’t know why but for some reason I felt as if we were supposed to be here. It was as if there was this connection that bonded us. I don’t know what I felt but it felt good. He was so calming.
MASKED GUY
I don’t know how long we stayed there but I liked being with her. There was always these moments that neither of us would talk but we didn’t babble anything just to fill the awkward silence because, first of all, it wasn’t awkward. We found the silence soothing.
Out of nowhere, I felt as if I wanted to know if she’d think of me differently if she finds out who I am. Wait, I don’t even know her name…
“What’s your name?” I asked.
“Wow, we’ve talked for what seemed like hours and you don’t know my name. Well, I also don’t know your name, ne?” She replied and smiled. “Does it matter?”
“Not really. But at least I can have a name to look up if ever I want to see you again.” I replied.
Well, that was straightforward.
“Good point.” She said and took off her mask, her curls falling back to place as she took of the strap. “This mask sure isn’t that comfortable. Anyway, Hino Rei desu.”
“Well, hi, Rei-chan.” I waved a little, curving the side of my lips for a smile.
“Hello.” She replied, “What’s your name?”
It was as if we just met each other all over again. I took off my mask and revealed my identity.
“Well, that explains a lot.” She said.
I was happy to see that she wasn’t flailing or anything. She was just looking at me fondly. I took a closer look at her as well.
“You look a little familiar.” I said.
“Well, you look a lot familiar.” She replied. “I see you on TV all the time.”
I laughed and she did as well. The whole time I was with her I felt open and light. It was as if no problems existed.
“Nah, seriously,” I said when we stopped laughing. “Where have I seen you?”
“I’m Jun’s ex.”
“Oh.”
Well, now I remember. Jun brought her along when Arashi and our group went out together. But I didn’t know if she still had feelings for the guy and if it brought back any memories that she didn’t want to remember.
“Hey,” she patted my shoulder. “Jun and I are history and I’m way over him. No harm in mentioning him. We’re cool.”
“That’s good to know.”
That was more than just good to know. I didn’t want to ruin the moment by bringing up someone that was her past. And also, I didn’t want to be run after by Jun on Monday for stealing his girl, well, his ex.
I found her face growing nearer and I realized that I was leaning forward. I didn’t stop myself as my lips touched hers.
HINO REI
I didn’t push him away, nor did I protest. His kiss was soft and sweet but I didn’t kiss him back. He pulled away shortly after.
“Gomen,” He mumbled. “I tried to hold myself.”
I smiled at him and didn’t realize that I was the one leaning towards him this time. He was quiet as he held my nape with one hand and caressed my cheek with the other. He locked our lips together but when his tongue demanded entrance, I didn’t know whether or not I’d give it to him.
I couldn’t really tell if I was ready for love. If I part my lips for him, it’ll be like opening myself back to love. Am I ready for that?
He didn’t force me to open my lips again and pulled away. He didn’t say anything but I could see worry in his eyes.
“Gomen,” I said. “I-I’m not sure if I want this. I’m not sure if I’m ready to love again.”
He nodded. “I understand. I can wait.”
“C-Could you help me m-make sure?” I stuttered uneasily.
He touched my cheeks and smiled. He was so gentle and his tender hold on me was very calming. He leaned forward to plant another kiss on my lips and unlike the first kiss, I didn’t feel queasy anymore. He answered the enigma which bothered me for some time now. Yes, I was ready for love. I parted my lips for him and he deepened the kiss. He made me feel that I made the right decision and that he was the right person who’d mean the greatest to me. As he kissed me, I slowly felt how much he was starting to mean to me. I felt how much he’d like to be part of my life. I felt how much he wants to be the one that I would love back.

Since we were all reluctant to leave the party, we left long past midnight. Eiko offered that Saeko and I just stay for the night. Saeko yawned and I did too. We were all so tired. Eiko brought out some sleeping bags and we set them up in her room. We cleaned up and got ready for bed when something in what Saeko said struck me.
“It’s past midnight…” She yawned. “Let’s go to sleep, it’s the 14th already.”
“Valentines’?” I turned and looked at the calendar. Yes, it’s already the 14th of February, Valentines’ Day.
“Oyasumi.” Eiko said as she turned off the lights and slept near my sleeping bag.
Even if I was so tired, I couldn’t get myself to sleep. I checked my phone and saw that it was already 3am. We went to bed an hour and a half ago yet I could get a wink of sleep.
“Eiko?” I whispered and shook her gently.
“What?” She whined. “I was having a good dream…”
“Sorry,” I whispered. “Do you still have some ingredients for chocolate left?
“Yeah.” She mumbled. “I think. Get as much as you want, just let me sleep. Goodnight, Rei.”

UEMURA SAEKO
I woke up the next morning to find an empty sleeping bag between me and Eiko. I shook myself awake and lazily walked to the kitchen for some water.
The kitchen, to my surprise was a complete mess. It was so not like Eiko to have her kitchen untidy or at least not look like a tsunami just passed. There was chocolate powder everywhere. The spatula was in a mixing bowl and brown liquid was all over the place. I saw Rei lying her head down on the table, using her arms as pillow. She had an envelope on one hand and a pencil on the other.
I took the pencil off her hand and placed it beside her. I also took the envelope and straightened the unwanted folds it had from Rei’s falling asleep. I couldn’t control my curiosity and read the front part of the envelope.
