Alrighty... you see on the top of your LJ page, when you are connected to your account, there are some categories: Journal/Manage/Help/Search/About... put your little arrow on the word Manage (don't clic)

Then, you'll see : Entries/Info/Friends/User Pictures/Tags/Password/Custumize/Communities. Clic on User Pictures And then browse/search for your pic (avatar) and upload it. It'll automatically make it your icon by default...

If you have any questions, ask me and I'll try to help you to the best of my ability. You can add me on msn messenger or AIM if you want to... it may be easier to communicate (the info's on my profile page) I don't use my yahoo messenger at all, or almost >.>
