It had taken a long time to find a road that led to New York. There were plenty of roads, but almost none he could use. They were still alive in a city like this. Lost, forgotten, but not dead. Eventually he had given up, and just followed the centipede smell, because even if New York had the protection of rats and birds, they had still infested ( Read more... )

"It's all right." Dan said quietly; he usually walked most places - he never bothered with a car. Who needed one when he had Archie?

"I'll be there as soon as I can." He continued. "Wait for me."

"I've waited long enough to see you. I can wait a little longer." Neferti said, his smile coming through his voice again.

"It's a red and yellow building. Near the grocery store." He added, trying to see out the window at anything that would Dan get there faster.

"I know where that is," Dan said - he liked Indian cuisine occasionally, although it gave him heartburn sometimes. "I'll be there as soon as I can." A pause.

"And try not go get into trouble." He smiled, then, too - just a little, over the lump in his throat and the shock still lingering in his mind. He hung up and left the groceries where they lay, just having enough sense to lock the door behind him.

It took him about twenty minutes to walk at a quick pace - before he spotted the restaurant. It wasn't one he'd been to, mostly because he didn't speak the language.

He crossed the street and immediately started scanning the crowd for Neferti.

Neferti had been waiting, doing his best to stay out of trouble, which wasn't actually too hard, because he had been waiting for Daniel, and hadn't been paying too much attention to anyone or anything else.
He could count all the times he had been nervous on one hand.

He saw Dan a few moments before Dan saw him, and his stomach did another of those annoying leaps it had started since he'd arrived.

He lifted his arm, calling out Daniel's name, and for just a moment, he tried to keep his dignity, to approach with a calm coolness. But he couldn't do it, and a moment later he was flinging himself at Daniel.

Dan turned when he heard his name - and when he spotted Neferti running toward him, the world fell away. He had never thought something so strong would come to him - the relationships he'd been in where easy ones. And nothing about this boy had been easy, not from the start, and not now.

He didn't have Discedo to hide behind. He had to face this, face this reality.

"Nef--" The name was cut short as he caught the other in a strong embrace; nothing mattered, nothing even registered. If people looked at them, he didn't care. It didn't matter, it didn't matter - he would no longer have to swallow down his regrets before falling asleep.

He was nearly knocked off his feet, but had braced just in time. "It's good to see you." Daniel said finally. "I never thought I would."

Nefertif flung himself at Dan, wrapping his arms around him tightly and pressing his face against Dan's neck, breathing in his scent, which he had missed.
"I came as soon as I could. It's so far from Waghdas and there was so much I needed to do before I could come." He was babbling really. Making noise because it seemed appropriate.

"It's good to see you again." He whispered, pressing his mouth against Daniel's for a long-missed kiss.

"It's okay, you're here, I can't believe you're here... any second now, I'm going to wake up, aren't I?" Okay, so maybe Dan was babbling too, but he was happy, unbelievably happy, and he couldn't imagine what he'd done to deserve this good fortune.

Daniel kissed him back before he realized they were in public - not that New York didn't have its share of unusual sights. But he was never a PDA type anyway.

He drew back and looked at the other man. "We'll take a taxi back home. Come on."

Neferti was smiling, a content cat with cream smile, unconcerned and happy with whatever Dan suggested. Dan might have suggested they go see a ball-game for all they cared. There was no shame or any sort of inhibition in his kisses, or the way he stood a bit too close while they waited for the Taxi.
He was quiet, not because he had nothing to say, but because it was alright for there to be quiet. They didn't need to fill the silence, and words weren't always appropriate. They were speaking loudly enough in other ways, that words weren't necessary. The strong, crushing embrace, the kisses, they were all enough.

Dan flagged down a taxi; it was a short ride back to his brownstone. In a way, he was glad they'd had the time apart - he had a chance to fix his house up the way it used to be.

He unlocked the door - it was the first time he had let go of the other's hand since they were reunited. It was almost like he was afraid that he'd turn around and Neferti would be gone.

"Come on in -" Daniel said, standing back from the door. He then picked up the groceries he'd abandoned. "Are you hungry?"

Neferti watched everything with curiosity and interest as they went back to Dan's house. New York was so much like Waghdas, and so different at the same time. The rules of the universe were fixed in a way he remembered, but it still felt like a place that broke all the rules.
He followed Daniel into his house, looking around casually at everything, the personal touches and the warmth of the home.
"Are you back to feeding me?" Neferti asked. "Can it be anything except caned soup?"

"Always," Dan chuckled; he leaned over and kissed Neferti's temple. He headed into the kitchen, putting down the bag on the table - he put away some of the perishables before looking at the other.

"Oh, there's someone I want you to meet first," He said. "She's probably down in Archie." He gave the other man a little wry smile.

Neferti's eyes closed briefly at the kiss against his temple. Just a gentle token of affection, but one he had missed. He trailed along behind Dan as he began putting his groceries away and lurked not far behind him, not wanting to be too far now that he had been able to close the distance between them.

"Laurie?" He asked. He had accepted that he would be coming to Dan in his own world, and Dan had relationships here that preventd what they'd had in the strange apocalypse world. He hadn't cared, and he had prepared himself mentally if it meant the physical aspect would be denied. He didn't need it. He had just wanted to see Dan again, and if it was just as a friend, he was prepared to deal with that too.

"He smiled, although it was a bit tight. A bit strained. A brave smile however, one he would try his best to keep real.

"Of course I want to meet your friends."

"Not exactly." Daniel led the way downstairs and turned on the light; this was his sanctuary, his real home. The place he felt most comfortable. It was good to be back amoung his tools, his possessions; he didn't know how much he valued this normality, this simplicity until it was taken away.

Archie's hatch was open - Dan stepped up into the ship. "Just as I thought, here you are." He scooped up a Siamese cat from the pilot's chair and brought her out. "Lily, meet Neferti."

Neferti followed Dan down into his basement, his eyes peering at everything with equal measures awe and curiosity. The workshop was incredibly impressive he thought. He hadn't imagined it like this, even during the times Dan had told him about it.
It was amazing, really that any one man could accomplish so much.

When Dan emerged with a pretty siamese cat, his heart softened as it always did at the sight of beautiful creatures not made by men or gods. "Hello." He said respectfully to the cat holding out a hand to her, his attention completely diverted from Dan for a moment.

Daniel put the cat down and sat back on the hatch steps, watching the creature approach Neferti to sniff his fingers. Lily then nudged her head against the man's hand, a low purr starting.

"She likes you. I just got her about a month ago. She's young, about a year old." He said, although he was sure that Neferti wasn't listening to him. Of course, getting this cat was a double-edged sword as he would have to really compete for attention.

Neferti's touched the cat, gently smoothing hand over her fur, smiling at the purr and reaching to stroke her gently, before he looked up at Dan.
"She's beautiful, and she suits you." Neferti said smiling, turning his attention back to the cat and watching her arch under his expert fingers.

"But, I thought you were more partial to birds." Neferti added.
