Dear Everything!
Hello from Belgium. I can't quite remember the primary motivation for me wanting to come here (oh yeah, no other ideas), but thankfully it's all working out okay. Yesterday, I had one of those, 'oh fuck what is wrong with me?' kind of days, but today is much, much better!
Anyway, I thought I might impart a bit of information about this wierd place...
#1: The Flemish hate the French-Belgians, and the French-Belgians hate everybody!
The second: All Belgians love festivals. They have them almost everyday, and each one is even cuter than the last. Yesterday I stumbled upon one called Les Festival des Geants (the festival of giants), which is basically an excuse to make massive papier-mache puppets (10 feet tall) of national heros, which are mainly cartoon characters, as the case may be. The puppets dance around to vaguely cuban-sounding brass bands, who themselves are dressed up in medieval rags. It's FUCKING AMAZING.
Thrice is Nice! = A great deal of Belgians still seem to believe strongly in Colonialism, which is both curious and alarming. Everywhere you look on Sundays, there is someone trying to sell you ivory, and bookstores are jam-packed wíth stories of glorious conquests and discoveries abroad. I also saw a massive wall mural depicting TinTin (national hero #1) dressed in safari gear and chasing african warriors in a jeep (and to think I dressed up as him for Halloween).
Finally, this is an open appeal for letters! PLEASE SEND ME MAIL AND IN RETURN I WILL SEND YOU LOTS AND LOTS BACK, PROMISE.
