After watching Iron Man 2 last week, I became curious to hear Scarlett Johansson's music. I had heard her covers of Tom Waits a while back and disliked them, but her collaboration with Pete Yorn looked interesting, as they styled themselves after Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot. The album is called Breakup and explores the theme of relationships. I actually can't stop listening to it,
Relator is especially catchy. They're not too far off from another actress/musician project,
She & Him, with Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward.
Charlotte Gainsbourg (who happens to be the daughter of Serge Gainsbourg) and Beck made a concept album together called IRM, inspired by the sounds of an MRI scanner. I love Beck and I love Charlotte Gainsbourg as an actress but I'm not really into the album. However, their video for Heaven Can Wait is pretty amazing. According to Pitchfork, it's a "Dada brainfuck" and I don't think you can describe it any better than that. But I was disappointed to find out that the director Keith Schofield seems to have blatantly ripped off photographer William Hundley's concepts without attributing any credit. (Scroll down
here for the photo comparisons.) Or is it an homage? Either way, Hundley had no idea about it until he came across the video himself. It raises some interesting questions about appropriation.
