I bought this a while ago from the Book Depository but it's still resonating with me so I think it deserves a post. A few years ago, a friend gave me a collection of postcards by
Yoshitomo Nara, a Japanese pop artist. His pictures of little girls are very distinctive... cute but sinister. I couldn't make up my mind if I liked his style. I came across an art installation of his at the GOMA in Brisbane and whilst browsing in the gallery store, I fell in love with his children's book called The Lonesome Puppy. The official summary is: A puppy so large that no one notices he is very lonely until he meets a determined little girl. I absolutely adore his illustrations, his use of simple bold lines are so textural and reminds me of etching even though I'm pretty sure he uses pastels. A lovely visual narrative.
