Seven years ago today.....

....was my very first day of work. It was my graduation day at UP Diliman, but I decided to skip it for work. I mean, what did I miss, then-soon-to-be-deposed- Philippine President Erap's speech? Please.

I'd rather pay money to watch midgets fuck in the back alleys of Manila.

Wow. Seven years?! Has it been that long? Am I that old? Yes. and yes.

God, I still remember what I wore on my first day. I had a blue silk polo with little brown elephants on it. I just came from my very last vacation as a free person: three days in Boracay with my sister, her friends and my dad (also turned out to be the last vacation with him EVER). So, I went to the guard's desk wearing my bee hades and he asked where I'm going.

Obviously, the guard was not informed that I'm a new employee of the Manila Standard.

And I said, "I'm the new artist of Manila Times."

The guard raised his eyeborw and said I was in the wrong newspaper.

Then I balked. "Oh my goodness....I meant Manila Standard!!!" And broke into fits of giggles. My first day at work and I got the name of my office wrong. Great start, if you ask me.

You see, I was avid reader of Manila Times' infamous Prattle section. This is their dirt rag on local showbiz celebs. My friends and I would be at the Library's door waiting for the librarian to arrive and we rush to our dose of scandals.

However, I ended up in Manila Standard....and became their Art Director for FIVE YEARS. Oh Lordy, why I hung on so long? Not the pay, definitely. Whores in the Pegasus joint made more money farting that I do in a month.

Because I didn't need to leave the soonest, the people were interesting, it was a dream job of mine (I've always wanted to be an editorial cartoonist since I was a divette in elementary) and I want to learn and be a part of Asia's most free press.

Of course, I set myself a deadline and it passed and now I'm in a new job.

Of course, I look back with "fondness" at those days when I was watching a movie with a friend then the publisher calls me up screaming to return to work because the World Trade Center was attacked. Or I was having a slice of pizza then rushed back to work when I heard on the radio that the "No" vote won thus killing the Senate's proceedings of Erap's impeachment. And so on and so forth.

I was in my first job for five years. I don't know if I could beat that record.

Of course, I like what I'm doing right now. I have access to one of the finest libraries in the country and then there's free aircon to escape the 36-degree-heat of Manila. heheheh.....but of course, like a lot of us, I think I should be just following my passion.

Sadly, some passions are lucrative than others. But oh well, count thy blessings.

To think that yesterday was Labor Day and in celebration of the workers, I call on the cubicled drones to unite and say it with me. "I am employed and I am happy." If you say it long enough, you might even convince yourself of that.
