Part 5! Done!!

Jul 16, 2010 12:13

I ... refuse to think about how long this took me on the grounds that I may depress myself. ;P Though, to be fair to myself, I did find out the deadline had been moved while writing part 5. This meant I took the time to do things like get a haircut (yay!) and visit family and finally join the 21st century and replace my 8 year-old cell phone. (I can text now! And play games! And take pictures! And that's seriously the tip of the iceberg! It's like I'm part of the StarTrek crew!!)

Also, this was the most complicated section. It's where everything comes together, which meant I had to figure out what "everything" consisted of exactly, and what didn't fit (no matter how hilarious and made of genius it was). Which was harder than I expected. Three times I thought I'd screwed up so badly the entire story was ruined. Fortunately, they all had simple fixes that seemed really obvious when I found them. (It'll be interesting to see if I remember what they were once everything is said and done.)

I'm really, really hopeful part 6 will be easier. I think I've hit the climax (if I'm using that word correctly ... Frodo throwing the ring into Mordor (or not) is an example of climax, right?) and all the rest is falling action and denoument. Which means I've done all the heavy lifting, plot-wise, and the rest is easy? Right? *hopes really, really hard*

Anyway! To numbers: Part 5 is 13,191 words long. Which puts me at 48,769 words total. :D Obviously, more will be added, but there will be a purging once I'm done. (Part 5 is definitely the part that shapes all the others. I'm going to have to add a little detail in part 1 because of something that happens in part 5. And there's a chunk of dialogue in part 4 setting up a scene that never made it into part 5.)

I've burbled on enough, I suspect. (I also suspect this is of no interest to others, but I'm enjoying recording the process. I'm hoping this is all stuff I'll be able to use in the future.)

On a completely different subject, I am jonesing for a rewatch of Avatar: The Last Airbender like you would not believe. I blame the failed, failed movie. I'm really sad it's such a pile of ick. I mean, I was unhappy when the casting came out, so I've been expecting a certain level of failure from that point onward. (Starting on such a wrong foot really foreshadowed a fall.) But to have it confirmed that it failed so utterly has only reminded me of how excited I was for a movie version way back in the day.

There was a scene where Zuko learns something about his people (his mother? the last avatar? his great-grandfather?). He's in a dark room with Fire-Nation stuff kind of looming out of the background. And I remember thinking how cool that scene would look if it was shot real-life. Like any scene in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films where the level of detail was so awesome that you could build meta off a wall support if you wanted. Plus, there's a subtlety of expression an actual human being can have that animation just can't capture. Obviously, this movie attempt wasn't going to bring it. I can only keep a wistful sort of hope that someday it will happen and happen right.

In the meantime, I want a A:TLA rewatch!!! :D

Related in the thinnest sense, I've discovered the hypnotic power of fandomsecrets. It's like gambling. Sure most of it is about stuff I could care less about, but a small fraction is fascinating. :)
