#6: Minty fresh!

Dec 18, 2008 10:48

It looks like everyone's okay, even those who were dead.  Does anything that happens in this city have actual consequences?

Anyways, I'm looking forward to getting back to my lab--working from home isn't really an option.  And I guess I should pick up some new toothpaste while I'm out.  All I can taste is peppermint.

minty fresh, candy cane pain, affected, curse

Are not the fear and pain of the past few days consequences enough? Truly I am glad that all is well.

I'm not saying I wish the damage from the injection had stayed around, because of course I don't. But it's just...some people tried to save others, and some people tried to hide, and some went on a spree killing zombies (who used to be their neighbors, it was easy to forget that during the past few days.) And now today--it doesn't really matter what anyone did or how much they lost or how scared they felt. We're all back where we started, just...mintier, in some cases.

Quite the contrary. I believe we have all come away from this experience with a deeper knowledge of ourselves and those around us. We may be back where we started physically, but the hearts of many have been changed.

For the better?

I don't really think so.

You are quite cynical, aren't you? Pray, what gives you such a gloomy perspective?

I've just learned the hard way that most people are fairly shallow and out for whatever they can get. And the people who truly try to do good...I mean, at least they're trying, but they're not usually getting at the root of the problem.

I could not disagree more! I have met many selfless people who have done many acts of kindness and a great deal of good. And though there are some very loud people who are of a shallow, selfish disposition, we must not let them blind us to the presence of goodness in others. Most people do the best they can with the tools they have been given.

I did know someone who was really nice and did all she could to help the homeless. But she fell for the act of lone of those loud, shallow, selfish people. And I can't do anything about it, especially if I can't even get home.

I am sorry to hear that. But I am sure, if she is a person of sense, she shall not be ensnared for long.

And take heart! Whenever you manage to return home, you shall return at the moment you had left. Your stay in the City may be long, but in reality, you will have lost no time at all.

I guess. I'm not leaving it up to chance, though.

How long have you been here?

Only a few days, but I have been assured that such is the case.

I've been here just over a week. This place is...overwhelming, to say the least. When and where are you from? You sound a bit...old-fashioned. I'm from California in 2008 but there are people here from a lot of times and different versions of Earth. Or maybe somewhere else entirely. Parallel universes.

Yes, overwhelming quite describes this place. I have had some difficulties accustoming myself to the manners and social customs of this place; they are so different from my own.

My name is Emma Woodhouse. I am from Surrey, England, in the year 1815. It is a pleasure to meet you, Mr...?

Dr. Horrible. It's kind of a pseudonym. I'm not technically a doctor...Anyway, it's nice to meet you too. Emma Woodhouse...that name seems familiar but I can't remember from where.
