[The video is focused on a small pile of paper fortunes. Some are visible: "Things aren't always as they seem." "Your life will take a new turn." "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer." Penny doesn't bother turning the camera towards her.]I usually really like fortune cookies. Sure, they don't always taste great, but they're fun ( Read more... )

One of those sounds like part of our family wisdom: "Nothing is as it appears." My grandfather used to tell my father that, and then Daddy passed it on down to me, just the same.

Doesn't that make things kind of difficult, though? If nothing is the way it appears, what're we supposed to think about the things around us? The people?

Well, it's mostly for the sake of adventuring, and I don't think it's meant to mean that everything in the world is really some sort of deception. It's just that you shouldn't overlook something just because it doesn't seem worthy of looking at, and that you should take the time to find things out for certain, rather than just assuming you know how they go.

Twice!

Oh, goodness. Er...well, I think...that is, I don't think it's wise to assume that everyone you meet will always be good, of course, but I also don't think you ought to assume they might, er, go on a killing spree, either.

No, you're completely right. That'd be an awful thing to think about people.

Would your dad have any advice?

Um. I suppose the only bit that might be useful is "Read everything; you might learn something". But of course, if there's nothing to read, then you can't be expected to learn it, so...well.
