[Background]
The Vikings of the village of Berk are strong and brave, and hardened by years of living in the severe climate of there village, enduring snows, and hails, and other disasters. They are a proud village of warriors, who have, for generations, defended their village from the most terrifying beasts ever to plague mankind. While other villages had pests like mice, the village of Berk had dragons. Every Viking lived to fight these beasts, and even the children of the village were trained at an early age. Everyone did their part, and killing a dragon would bring unending fame and honor to the mighty Viking who took it down…
Which was never going to be a fate that Hiccup would achieve. As much as he wanted to fight dragons, he wasn’t strong, or threatening. He was thin, a lot weaker then his peers, and he was constantly causing trouble for the village. He meant well. He desperately wanted to fight dragons like everyone else. At least partially, this was so that he could please his father, and gain the acceptance of the rest of his peers. Hiccup was the son of Stoic the Vast, the chief of Berk. His mother, Valhallarama, died when he was young, and his father was constantly frustrated to have a son who just couldn’t seem to do anything right. The rest of the village was just angry at him for causing trouble. Because of this, Hiccup could also never get the attention of the girl he liked, Astrid, who was very strong, and held a lot of promise as a Viking.
Even though he wasn’t physically strong, Hiccup was very clever. He learned how to invent things to make up for his lack of brawn so that he could still fight dragons. This still commonly leads to disaster, because in his determination to prove himself, Hiccup doesn’t always think his plans through. Usually, his new inventions just got him into trouble, or causes problems for others in the village. So, instead of being allowed to fight with the other Vikings, Hiccup was an apprentice in a blacksmith shop, where he worked for Gobber, who had lost his arm and leg to dragons, and got around using prosthetics, as well as lead the dragon training program where the young Vikings in Berk learned to fight dragons.
However, Hiccup never let himself be discouraged. Even in the middle of dragon attacks, he would sneak out to try to kill a dragon and prove himself. He wasn’t after just any dragon though. He was trying to kill the most terrifying, destructive, deadly dragon that the Vikings had ever encountered. This dragon was so fast that no Viking had ever seen it, but it had cost the Vikings dearly in damages and lives. It’s always there, it never misses, and no one has ever killed one. That dragon was called the Night Fury, and Hiccup was determined to be the first to take one down.
One night, just as Gobber leaves the smithy to fight, Hiccup drags out a canon he invented that could shoot bolas for him, since he couldn’t throw them far himself. He sets it up by a cliff, just as a Night Fury shoots out a tower in front of him… He barely manages to see a shadow in the sky, and he takes a shot at it, and hits!
…. And his victory is short lived, because a Monsterous Nightmare is right behind him. Long story short, in his attempts to get away from the dragon, it causes a lot of damage to the village, only making everyone even more angry at him. No one believes that he hit a Night Fury. No one believed in him. Gobber was the only one who even acknowledged how much Hiccup was trying, but he still knew Hiccup was trying to be something he wasn’t, and failing badly at it. He’s the only one willing to give him a chance at Dragon training too.
He was still determined, and if the rest of the village wouldn’t help him, he’d just have to find the Night Fury he shot down on his own. Just when he was giving up hope of finding it, he finds a huge dragged track… That of course leads him right to the Night Fury. The first second he sees it, he’s scared, but he realizes that the dragon is completely tied up, and unable to move. He draws his dagger and goes over to it, gaining confidence as it doesn’t move. He’s shocked, and then proud that he’s taken it down, thinking it’ll finally solve all of his problems, But he would have to kill it first….
… And he can’t do it. He holds his dagger up to stab it for a moment, knowing that if he killed it, then he would finally be accepted, but he just can’t. He also realizes it’s his fault the dragon is stuck like that. Instead of killing it, he starts cutting the ropes binding it.
The dragon instantly pounces on him, pinning him to a rock. Hiccup is terrified of it for a second… But just when it looks like it’s about to kill him, it just roars in his face, and leaves him.
Hiccup finally realizes that he just can’t fight dragons anymore. As he would describe later, in that moment with the Night Fury, he could see that it was just as terrified as he was… But his dad was not going to listen. Gobber finally convinced Stoik to let Hiccup join dragon training, and of course, his dad doesn’t listen to Hiccup’s protests, and pretty much forces his opinion on him.
The guy gets continuously bugged by the rest of the students. He’s got little time to think though, because dragon training involves Gobber letting dragons loose on everyone, and letting them learn on the job. Hiccup tries to be inconspicuous, but ends up getting cornered by the Gronckle, and saved at the last second by Gobber. Gobber tells Hiccup that a dragon always goes for the kill… But that Night Fury hadn’t.
Hiccup goes back into the forest and tries to follow where the Night Fury had gone before. He finds a reveen, and quickly sees the Night Fury, trying to fly over the rock walls, apparently unable to fly too high without quickly falling. Hiccup draws it, but he’s confused why he can’t fly, and he realizes one of the dragon’s tail fins is missing.
Back at home, Hiccup has to read a manual on dragons for training. In his research, the solution for dealing with every dragon is to kill it. The only page blank is the Night Fury. It is the only one without a solution… You’re supposed to run from it.
Hiccup goes back to the Night Fury, bringing a fish with him to offer it. It approaches him hesitantly. Hiccup takes his dagger out and throws it away from him to show he means no harm, and holds out the fish. The dragon opens its mouth to grab it, showing no gums, making hiccup think he’s toothless, but he’s rapidly proven wrong as the dragon’s teeth come out so he can bite the fish. Again, the dragon backs him up into a rock, scaring him, and he tries to say he has no more fish…
… And the dragon pukes up half of the fish he just ate into Hiccup’s lap. Hiccup is disgusted, but the dragon looks at him and the fish expectantly. The boy barely manages to choke back a bite of the raw fish. The dragon seems to warm up to him a little, but when he reaches out to touch it, it backs off. However, it tolerates the boy’s presence, with some annoyance at first. Hiccup sticks around, completely curious. He starts sketching the dragon in the sand, and is surprised when it grabs a tree branch and draws squiggles all around him. When Hiccup respects his squiggle drawing and approaches the dragon, it finally lets him touch him. Eventually, Hiccup decides to name it, calling it Toothless.
When Hiccup goes back to the village, he learns from Gobber that if you go for a dragon’s wings and tails, they can’t fly anymore. He finally knows why Toothless can’t fly. He builds a prosthetic tail fin for him, and brings a bug basket of fish to distract Toothless while he attaches it to him. Incidentally, he also learns that Toothless can’t stand to even be near smoked eel, which became important for that day’s dragon training, because he used it against another dragon.
Toothless eats, and Hiccup attaches the fin. Toothless eyes him warily and takes off, and the tail fin works! The problem is, Toothless can’t control how it moves, so he can’t use it to control his direction yet. Hiccup had to control it. Toothless works on it more, building a saddle and a harness so that he could help him fly again. While he works with Toothless, he learns more and more about dragons in general, which helps him to learn how to control the other dragons during dragon training. The other students start to respect him, while Astrid, the star student, becomes jealous of him. He keeps hiding his visits with Toothless from the other villagers.
Eventually, Hiccup perfects the mechanisms for the tail fin, using a custom peddle to control it during flight. Toothless can finally fly again, as long as Hiccup is with him. He meets other dragons with Toothless, and he finally realizes that every thing the Vikings know about the dragons is wrong.
In the meantime, his father returns from a trip to try to find the dragon’s nest. Stoick is overjoyed knowing his son did so well in training… Completely misunderstanding his son, unsurprisingly. However, he still gives him a helmet as a present (It’s half of his mom’s breastplate).
Unfortunately, Hiccup does so well in dragon training, because he can’t let his dad down, that he is chosen to face a Monsterous Nightmare in the ring, and kill it in front of the whole village.
He tries to run with Toothless, but Astrid follows him, extremely suspicious about his progress, and finds out about his secret. Of course, she’s completely ticked about it at first, and she runs off to oust him to the village, but Toothless picks her up and puts her at the top of the tree to force her to listen to Hiccup. He tries to get her to understand by letting her ride on Toothless with him, which the dragon wasn’t going to take for a second. He goes really fast, spins, and does everything he can to terrify her until she finally apologizes, all the while with Hiccup trying to get him to stop, and only after the apology does he fly gently to prove to her that he’s not bad.
Unexpectedly, while they are flying on him, Toothless gets called by something. He and the rest of the dragons fly to a huge mountain, and Hiccup and Astrid learn about the HUUUGE dragon there that is forcing the dragons to gather food for it. They all barely escape, and they realize that is the nest. Astrid wants to tell Stoick, but Hiccup knows that his dad would kill them if they told him. Even so, he still has to kill the Monsterous Nightmare the next day…
And even listening to how proud his father was, he still refuses to kill it. He even goes so far as to finally admit to it that he’s not one of the Vikings. He tries to tame it to prove to everyone that the dragons weren’t bad, but his dad barges into the ring, ruining it. The dragon almost gets him, but Toothless bursts in and protects him. Hiccup tries to get him to leave, but he wont. Toothless nearly kills Stoick, but only stops as Hiccup tells him to stop, and he gets captured. Everyone realizes that Hiccup and Toothless are connected. Hiccup desperately tries to tell his dad about the huge dragon, and how the dragons are forced to steal food, and in return Stoick denies Hiccup as his son before leaving to use Toothless as a guide to the dragon’s nest to kill them all.
Hiccup is left behind with everyone he trained with. Astrid wonders why he didn’t kill Toothless when he first found him. At first, Hiccup’s still angry, giving the usual answers Vikings liked to hear, like how he was a coward and how he was weak, but he said that he wouldn’t kill a dragon, not that he couldn’t. He knew that at that time, Toothless was just as scared as he was. He saw someone like himself. Then he decides to do something crazy… Which would be to help the other kids to ride dragons to the nest after their parents, if he didn’t suddenly find himself in a particular dream world all of a sudden.
[Personality]
After years of being rejected and outcast from the other Vikings in his village, Hiccup was awkward in his interactions with him, but his determination was obvious. He was completely obsessed with becoming like everyone else, and especially living up to his father’s expectations. All he wanted was to be accepted. He’s desperate for it, going out of his way all the time to try to strive to be better, when he was commonly told that all of what he did was wrong. Even so, he always believed in himself even when no one else would.
But he wasn’t like the other Vikings. He wasn’t strong or skilled at fighting, but he’s very smart. He uses his mind to make up for his lack of muscles, inventing various things to make fighting dragons easier in his earlier exploits, and using his invention skills to design a prosthetic tail fin for Toothless later on. It’s this same abundance of intelligence that makes him a skilled strategist, and when he is finally given the chance to be a leader, he excels, knowing exactly which of his friends would suit different tasks in the fight against the Red Death. It seems he understands other people’s talents and personalities well, though he doesn’t express it that much.
This is probably because he is also an amazing observer. When Hiccup first met Toothless, he didn’t try to immediately approach him. He sat back and watched him, slowly learning more and more vital information about his flight, his personality, and his behaviors. Those observations led Hiccup to his understanding of Toothless, and also his success in taming other dragons, because he tried out exactly what he had done with his own dragon. Even so, he really still has a tendency to jump into things, in spite of the huge advantage he gains when he takes it slow and assesses situations first.
Because he’s usually made fun of, Hiccup has gained a sarcastic sense of humor, which he uses when he’s at odds with the other Vikings. His usual personality, even when the other Vikings start to accept him, is actually somewhat shy, and still pretty awkward, like he doesn’t really know how to interact with people when they accept him.
One of the traits that he builds quickly is his courage. While he, somewhat recklessly, ran out into dragon battles numerous times to try to prove himself, he usually ended up running from dragons, rather then facing him. This was of course, smart, since he usually had no way to fight them. This was more out of intelligence then cowardice, but he was still rejected for being smart. When he found Toothless tied up in the woods, he hesitantly approached him, and almost killed him, but he was terrified the whole time. The important part was, he still faced Toothless, and he still had the courage to let him go, even knowing that he could very likely be killed. He soon grew enough to be able to face the rejection of the whole village in order to protect Toothless, and eventually, this is going to lead to him taking Toothless to take on the huge Red Death by themselves.
*WARNING! THIS PARAGRAPH CONTAINS HUGE SPOILERS FOR THE END OF THE MOVIE!*
He also proves to be really resilient as well, and determined, putting up with horrible situations and trying to cope as best he can. He put up with the rejection of the village for his whole life, and instead of wallowing in it, he became determined to prove himself. His coping skills are even more evident at the end of the movie, when Hiccup wakes up after the fight with the Red Death to realize he’s lost his leg. One would expect him to be completely horrified. However, he deals with it, accepting that he’d need to use a prosthetic for the rest of his life, and even joking about modifying it. Part of his ability to cope with his lost leg may have to do with the fact that because of it, he was given more in common with Toothless, who also needs a prosthetic replacement for something.
In general, Hiccup always tries to do the right thing, and at first, he thinks that gaining everyone’s approval means that he’s doing the right thing. However, he proves himself to be extremely open minded when he saves Toothless instead of killing him. This was after hundreds of years of fighting between the dragons and the Vikings. He had been totally convinced that Dragons were evil only a few hours before. His opinion got shattered in a matter of seconds. This is why he proves to be so influential in the end, because he’s open, and he adapts as the situation changes.
[Specialties/Abilities]
He’s really smart, and he likes to invent things to make his life easier, such as a canon to throw weapons for him when he can’t do it himself. As I mentioned in his personality section, he also is great at observing, and this makes it easier for him to understand people better, and to assess situations before he goes into them. He also can draw what he observes fairly well.
Because of his work with Toothless, he will have somewhat of a way with animals in general, because he learned how to gain a dragon’s trust and to train him, so in comparison, a dog or cat would probably be easy.
[Affection] Hiccup's into tough girls, if Astrid is any indication. He's kind of used to tough love, and he puts up with it, as long as he still knows he's loved in the end... Like how Astrid punches him, and yet he is totally ok with it because she kisses him right after.
[Fighting] Ahaha... Characters can try to hurt Hiccup if they want. He wont be really well equipped to fight back, and would be better suited to running. He can outsmart people. However, be warned. If you mess with Hiccup, a dragon is going to come, silently and quickly, to protect his human friend at all costs. DO NOT PISS OFF THE DRAGON.
