I had a brief, nostalgic tour around North London this evening on my way back from work. I had to drop off a library book on Java programming (not for me, but for the girlfriend) and it was thought-provoking to walk the streets of Kentish Town again.
It's quite surprising how quickly things change when one has been away for what is only, in reality, a few months. Still, there were quite a few new shops that have sprung up since my last visit. Most peculiar of all, I was actually able to go back and sit at the kitchen table where I spend many hours over the last year. I popped back to go and pick up post which has not been redirected to me, and my old landlady was in the house just tidying up a few loose ends. As difficult as things were towards the end, she was overwhelmed to see me and insisted that I come in for a chat.
Half an hour later, I emerged back onto the streets of Camden and took a slow walk through the unfurling crowds back to the Tube station. I was contemplating getting a drink at a pub and reading for a while and read one of the books that I picked up from the sale rack on the library (I know I know - more books, but where will I put them. However, one of them is the seminal "Travels with a Tangerine" by Tim Mackintosh-Smith, the companion to the TV series that turned me back onto Arabism in a big way.) I'm really excited to get stuck into that one.
