I tend to refer to myself as a nerd, but I have admittedly geekish tendencies. And, yes, I make a distinction.

Of course! A geek is not a nerd and vice versa.

I suspect it is that we prefer to be referred to the correct term at the correct time. Much like being called "Japanese" when a lot of Americans say "Chinese".

Or even preferring "Japanese" to "Asian."
