Last night Chris wanted me to go to the Lincoln Lagers meeting with him. It's a homebrew (beer) club that one of his co-workers belongs to. And as chris has been totally nerding out with the homebrew thing... he decided to get involved with the club as well. Yay him. It was fun... it was in the loading dock of the lazlo's brewery (so, really casual, and surrounded by brewing equipment). Basically the "meetings" entail everyone showing up with homebrew/weird/expensive beer, and everyone having a little taste. It's probably more intense than a wine tasting. They swirl. They sniff. They chew over the beer. And over these various beers, they discuss brewing technique and brewery tours and...
well. it's a beer nerd club.

There seems to be a correlation between men with beards and beer. most of the men there had beards. It was a much higher "scruff quotient".

So we get home, and we're relaxing, watching daria. We make brownies to have after the daily show. And then, about halfway through the daily show, Ka comes up and says, quite calmly "uh, guys, we have a house emergency."
"Emergency?" i thought "what could possibly be so bad as to be an EMERGENCY."
we went downstairs.
There was about 4 inches of water in the basement, coming out of the drain. It had infiltrated zach's study area, but luckily his computer was on high ground. There were a few moments of "wtf do we DO?" and then we found towels and mops, and barricaded the bathroom and drains (so no more water would come in, and we could contain it in the bathroom). We plunged... and let me tell you, you don't KNOW gross until you're standing barefoot, mid-calf-deep in water, plunging, and toilet paper starts coming out.
After about half an hour, we managed to sop up most of the water outside our little towel dam. And then, slowly, the water began to recede.

This morning, it's finally drained out. We're nervous to use any water, in case it starts backing up again. The bathroom is full of dark, grainy substance that is probably at least part human waste. The plumber is coming this afternoon. Apparently this has been a common problem today, as the first plumber we called had to refer us elsewhere.

But hey. it's mostly fixed. i'm really proud of ... well... everyone who lives here. Zach and Ka worked hard, and were really nice about the fact a bunch of their books got wet. Chris called his mom, and managed to stay mostly calm. I... well, I didn't cry, even a little bit, and while it may be dumb to be proud of that, I am. I usually react to any stress by crying. But I stayed calm, and aside from the initial "WTF DO I DO!?!?" I worked.

Oddly, this made chris and I have gooey couple time. I guess we were both just kind of traumatized by the whole flooding scenario, and just needed a bit of reassurance. But it makes me happy, and secure in our relationship. If we can still want to cuddle up after literally being knee-deep in shit, we're going to be ok.

Alas, neither of us slept well. He dreamt about rockets, I dreamt about flowers. And apparently whatever firefox uses to spellcheck does not think "dreamt" is an appropriate conjugation of "dream", but dictionary.com says it's ok, so i'm leaving it.

And thus ends the saga of "uh guys, we have a house emergency".
