I've been working on having less glowy-screen-time in my life. This week i've nearly made a quilt (plan to finish tomorrow), started crocheting again, spent more time playing with the cat, and started to read a 60s college text book on poetry analysis my dad gave me. I am reminded of how much the TV and the internet really do fill your head with ( Read more... )

The witchery of wealth is not in the having, but in the giving. You have discovered wisdom. If you are a Biblical person, remember the story of the woman who gave the 2 mites in the collection plate. The wealthy man scoffed at her for her pitiful donation ( 2 mites is about half a cent). Jesus rebuked him, and told him "Truly I tell you, she has give more than you. You gave out of your abundance, out of your wealth. She gave all she had, out of her poverty." You are learning that life and the things of true value, are not measured by the dollar sign. If you were a Mom, would you be more moved by a fancy $5 card your child bought for you, or a handmade one, on a sheet of typing paper, written with crayon, and had a picture drawn on it? The second one costs nothing; yet it is priceless.
Thankfully you are learning the greatest secrets, the hidden treasures in life. Want to expand on this? Give of yourself. Adopt an elderly person at a nursing home, commit to a 30 or 45 minute visit a week. Especially someone with no family nearby. They have so much to share, especially if you are interested in quilting or needlework. You needn't feel burdened, it's less than an hour a week, and we often blow that just surfing the 'net...yet the joy and hope you give a lonely elderly person is beyond compare. And the fringe benefit is, you are the one who grows and benefits from that friendship...You will also get a glimpse of life in a nursing home, and sometimes that is a bitter pill to swallow. Just this simple act can provide a person with a feeling of worth again, that they aren't "used up and put aside on a shelf" for their remaining days...give it some thought...
