"Forgetting Someone
Forgetting someone is like forgetting to turn off the light
in the backyard so it stays lit all the next day
But then it is the light that makes you remember."
- Yehuda Amichai
We can't replace our memories with people from the present. We can only accept that the people of the past are cemented in, as solidly stuck in our heads as our dreams are in the future.
And the same goes for our actions.
As Katie said, it's like carbon dating: The carbon decays exponentially, but there's always a smidgen of black left to pollute what you hoped would be a clear conscience.
The best we can do is cover ourselves up with new colors--keep layering on new memories until we're no more brilliant than a muddy palate.
