Comm logistics

As a follow-up to the discussion in this post, given what's happened in recent weeks with the new LJ ToS, I'm inclined to set up this comm on DW rather than LJ. It seems like most people are making the move to DW, and this might be one more way to get our arms around the new platform since staying at LJ feels dicey ( Read more... )

Seeing the turn things are taking, I agree that you set up the new comm on DW, which means I inevitably will have to create an account there, also because most people are moving their journals there too. But with this post you solved a "little" problem I was having since yesterday: I don't want to delete my LJ account! I've grown up with it and, silly as it may sound, I'm fond of the good memories of a more serene time of my life it represents. Like you, I was thinking of keeping it, at least for now, then, if LJ has something to object to the contents of my journal I'll move and delete it. Question: can I import my LJ contents to DW without deleting them here? I mean, can I have them on both platforms? I think the answer should be yes, as you say you will crosspost. Did I get it wrong?

Yes, you can absolutely have both! The process is pretty easy:

1. Create an account at DW.

2. Import your LJ to DW following the instructions on this page. Once you enter all the info for your import request, it may take a while for everything to finish as there's a queue of people all doing the same thing right now.

3. Going forward, you can post to both platforms simultaneously by posting new entries at DW via the Post an Entry function and checking the "Crosspost this Entry" box (underneath Tags, Mood, Location, etc.). The posting interface is VERY similar to LJ's, so it should feel familiar once you dive in!

Feel free to let me know if you have questions as you're going along, too!

Thank you. As you saw, I was able to create my new account and I've started the import process. The only thing I'm not sure about, though dream explained it to me, is if my account on DW is automatically friends only (it seems it's called "Access Only" there but I couldn't find it). She said she chose that setting, so it's like you must do it, it's not automatic. Or?

The DW import will preserve the security settings on your entries. So anything set to friends-only on LJ will import to DW as access list only; no need for you to adjust anything there. And then on this page, you can set the minimum entry security to "access list only" for any new entries you post to DW going forward.

I agree that setting the comm up on DW for any future work is a good idea, just in case things take a negative turn on LJ.

Hoping to tackle the setup this weekend. Still trying to figure out what to call it... :)

I completely agree that setting up a comm on DW is the only way to go.

I probably won't keep my LJ acct. I have a paid LJ account and can access statistics for my journal, and I've had some questionable traffic over the past year or so even though it's supposed to be friend's only. In fact, I once directed a post to the mysterious visitor and I think it stopped from that specific account after that, but I've still had some anonymous visitors and really shouldn't as it's friends only. Anyway, call me paranoid, but once I'm sure that everything has exported and is working okay, then I'm going to delete my LJ acct.

Something to keep in mind when you're looking at your visitors is that it captures anyone who navigates to your LJ homepage, profile page, etc. You do have one public post, and they could just be looking at that. It doesn't mean they've been able to access any of your friends-only content.

That being said, I'm no LJ security expert, and especially given some of the changes around here in recent years, you just never know...

(P.S. I saw you granted me access on DW-thank you! Don't forget to subscribe to me as well :) If you choose to leave LJ, I do NOT want to lose touch!)

It was the same account in Cyrillic script on the same day of the month at the same time for several months in a row and it happened to Fuji and later Missescookie too. I attempted to translate something on that journal (there wasn't much there) and it was a poem. There was no indication that the journal owner would have any interest that would have led them to ours. It was pretty creepy.

You're welcome! I don't want to lose touch either! I think I did subscribe to you. Is it not showing up that way? It says you granted me access to your journal.

I really can't wait for everything to be imported. I keep checking it like a darn fool :-)

It doesn't show that you've subscribed to me, only that you've granted me access. So make sure to subscribe-assuming you want my entries to show up on your feed, of course ;)
