Cheese It.

I never understood the pedestrian cross walk light... It's a blinking palm with a number counting down to nothing which then stops at a solid hand. If you think about it, the unblinking hand symbolically references "Stop!" in popular American semiotic traffic-sign systems, but if you were to unwittingly find yourself part-way across a pedestrian crossing zone it would not be a bright idea to stop for risk of being run over by an unwary driver. Rather, it would be much safer to arrive as quickly as possible to the nearest sidewalk.

Even assuming these signs are meant to warn potential crossing zone candidates that it may not be wise to enter the people walking area as it soon will become a vehicle driving area, there are those who will incorrigibly decide to race across the crosswalk with as complete a disregard to potential danger as a fish about to dine on a hooked worm.

In either case, whether Sunday stroller or Tuesday bowler, I think there should be an added stage between the countdown and the halt--one that simply states: "CHEESE IT!"
