Been a couple days. Oh no.
Friday - feels so long ago already. Went to class and learned some ways to map well log info, which was beyond me at moments sounded interesting and I'm sure is within my grasp with a minute bit of thought. I like mapping things. Much like I like graphing things. Okay, so I haven't really mapped anything, but I'd love to learn how (and hopefully I can incorporate some in my project). After class I worked on my thesis proposal some. That evening Travis came and we went to Sonic and tried the new macaroni and cheese bites.
Saturday - Had breakfast and just sat around and relaxed until the football game. I wore my new blue ribbon, Kansas shirt and belt. Quite a few geologists were at the game, so that was extra fun. We entered the stadium area about the same time as the marching band, they were a few people behind us playing. Before sitting in our seats, my group (Julie, Lindsay, David and Josh) got separated three times. Thank goodness for cell phones. A geol friend, Ben had saved us some seats with the other geols, and it wasn't too full yet anyway, so we ended up with some decent seats. Once the stadium was full, it was crazy to look behind us and just see people up to the sky. The game was sold out and I guess they said ~51,000 attended (no idea how many the stadium holds). Though I'm not a huge football fan I love the excitement of school spirit. I learned some new traditions, and got to act some out I did know about (such as waving the wheat). They played like 5 songs before the game. Not sure of titles, but there was the I'm a Jayhawk song, the Jayhakw fight song, the sunflower song, the alma mater (which is the same as IU's melody, no frangipani, though, which originally belonged to Cornell, I believe?) and maybe something else. The Rock Chalk Jawyhawk cheer is interesting. Though it sounds depressing at first, it also seems to have a mystical quality. The marching band display was good. I have to say I think Iowa State's performance may have been better than ours (though possibly not, I spent more time fiddling with the memory card in my camera during KU's show). They did a Pirates of the C show and ours was like 80's music. I was reminded during ISU's show how I dislike it when the colorguard uses flags that obnoxiously clash with the uniforms and do not relate to the theme. ISU's colors are red and yellow (uniforms mostly red) and the color guard's flags were neon green and blue. Maybe it was like seawater or something, I don't know...but with the red uniforms was disconcerting. Could they have not used pirate flags? However. The game went well, and we won :) I'm highly interested to see how we do this weekend with Missouri. Besides the fact that they are big time rivals, it is the last game (final challenge for being undefeated) and has effects on bowl game stuff. We had not been 10-0 since 1899, and have never been 11-0. One place printed 9-0 shirts, of which I saw some edited ones with the 9-0 crossed out, but I'm not sure there's room for 11-0. Or 12-0 ;) It would be nice if we could "twist the tiger's tail."
After that a few of us met up with some paleo and biology students to go to the T-Rex Cafe (like Rainforest Cafe, but with dinos and other extinct creatures). It was kind of odd going since I had just been on Tuesday, but still fun. The traffic leaving the tolled part of the road was pretty awful. All from the game, I'm guessing. We got there kind of late, so I didn't get a chance to look around in depth again or show Travis some of the cool details. This time I had a Fossil Fuel drink and a Stegosaurus Steak and Cheese sandwich.
Sunday - I think Sunday ended up being a slow day. I'm not sure what we did in the morning, but in the afternoon Travis and I went to Mass street and walked around. We stopped at Free State for an appetizer and drink. After that we went to the big HyVee on 6th street and bought dinner stuff. We got some orange cauliflower, which tasted like regular cauliflower but has more vitamins. And looks cool. We also shared this pink bottle of pink wine we bought on a whim last time he was here. Though it still wasn't the best, I think it's one of the easiest to consume wines I have tasted. Either that or I am get used to wine, though I doubt it, especially since I haven't had any since like last spring. And it had a pretty bottle :)
Monday - Got up and went to school and worked on my paleosols paper. After that Travis and I ventured to the Legends, this big shopping center in KC. I didn't know it, but it is more of an outlet mall, which is cool and good to know. We just looked around briefly before eating at a place called the Yard House, which claims to have the largest selection of beers on tap. They had a lot of tasty sounding food, and I got a pear walnut salad and macaroni and cheese. Both were very good, especially the salad. We got a brownie with ice cream for dessert, but it was not so great. It was like 1/2 in thick at most and more crunchy than soft. Oh well.
Tuesday - In the morning I made some oatmeal cookies with cranberries and white chocolate chips for the department Thanksgiving lunch. At noon I went to school for the lunch. People brought a wide variety of good things and quite a few people showed up. I should have made a sign for my cookies, as I think more would have been consumed. One lady asked what was in some other cookies and I said I didn't know, but pointed out mine and described them. She said "oh, I thought they had raisins" and proceeded to eat one and enjoyed it. I know raisins and nuts turn people off (though I personally like them), so a sign might have been helpful to show that these evils were not part of my cookies. I cleaned up after the party, and put all the remaining treats downstairs in the office. There a friend of mine took one of my cookies and halfway through eating it said she'd have to take some more, and she wasn't even finished with the first. I don't know if she knew they were mine, but it made me happy :) I went to class, and afterwards all the remaining cookies were gone. I was worried when the party ended because most of them were left, and I had made about 4 dozen, which is way more than I should consume. So everything was good :) I stopped by the bookstore for a bit afterwards, since they had the Touchdown Tuesday discount and finally found the perfect KU car decal. I specifically wanted a Jayhawk that was facing left (I placed an IU symbol on the left of my rear window and was hoping to compliment the arrangement by putting a KU on on the right) and had the "fancy" KU letters (as opposed to these blah block letters) and was also about the same height as my IU logo. That night Travis and I went to Wheat State pizza and got a pretty tasty wheat pizza with chicken and pepperoni and vegetables.
Wednesday - Travis left early in the morning and took one of my friends to the airport on his way home. My parents came around 10 or so. We had lunch at the 23rd Street Brewery and then went to see August Rush at the movie theater. We also saw Lions for Lambs or something like that, but I was awake only about 5 minutes of the movie. I kept thinking I'd wake up rested halfway through, but I just woke up briefly for moments, and eventually I was a bit more awake, the actors said a couple lines and then the credits started. Afterwards we to the Mad Greek for dinner, which was good.
Thursday - Got up later than I intended. I headed over to my parent's hotel and we went to the dept. chair's (my other advisor) place for our Thanksgiving meal. He hosts one each year for the students who stay in town and kindly invited my parents along, too. My mom was planning on getting some wine to take along, and I told he last night we should stop by a store in case they were closed the next day, as I wasn't sure the grocery stores here carried wine. To clarify, in Kansas only 3.2% alcohol can be in grocery stores. Many beers cater to this, but apparently not wines. Also, I am told that liquor stores do not carry anything besides liquor, so you cannot by mixers there, or like club soda. However, they are open Sunday, unlike in Indiana. But not that day after Thanksgiving, so my mom ended up getting some 3.2 beer as well as some nice flowers. About 5 students were at the meal, plus some faculty and family members. My advisor was there with his family, as well. The food was great and I met some new people. Upon leaving, my advisors said some pretty nice things about me and my upcoming internship to my parents, which was, well, pretty nice. After that we went back to their hotel and I slept a bit before coming here.
