Chemistry 101

I'm glad Merlin is a family show. I'm glad we've been privileged to see a romance filmed in the twenty-first century that is portrayed in a clean, pure way. Two people spend a few days in the same cottage and they're not undressing each other and rolling in bed together. The subject doesn't even come up, nor are there any insinuations about it. I'm even pleased about that part because some things could have been said that would have gone over the heads of the children. But they focused on what I believe needed to be focused on: A prince and a servant girl falling in love in an impossible situation.

They had this kiss. It wasn't a kiss that would lead them to the bed; it was a kiss that spoke to the future and culminated the awakenings that had been stirring in each since who knows exactly when. It surprised them both, and we the audience were privileged to see a young couple whose lives were forever changed because of this one kiss. I have seen many TV shows in my lifetime and have seen many kisses. Some have been sweet, some romantic, some passionate, some anguished. But I've never seen one quite like this one. I don't know why.Perhaps it was the music, the lighting, the slow-mo.  Perhaps it was the embarrassed lingering before it happened or the beguiled looks on their faces in that heart stopping moment right after. Perhaps it was because we knew who these two people were: the future king and queen of Camelot. In my mind, many of us were held captive by this kiss. We didn't just watch it; we partook of it with them. But in another sense, we felt like we were intruding and should tiptoe out.  It's hard to explain, but there are some of you out there who understand what I mean.

And one more note about this kiss and many other scenes between this prince and servant girl. I defy those people who would say there is no chemistry between these two actors. Maybe those who would make such an erroneous claim are looking for something else. Maybe there hasn't been enough "heat" for them yet. For me, I've seen these two generate plenty of heat in a just few seconds of screen time when they never even got to kiss. Watch their eyes, folks. I'm telling you now there are very few actors who can pull off what these two can without even touching each other. They can also take the caress of a hand and make it speak volumes. Remember this folks. In today's society, very little is left to the imagination. We get to see it all. Nothing is sacred. I'm glad we're seeing something different here.

My expectation is that when the prince becomes king he'll marry this girl. And when that happens, I'm sure they'll get to do all the undressing and bed stuff. Many don't agree with me, but in God's sight, that's the right time and place. And if we viewers get to see any of that, you bet your bottom dollar we'll get all the chemistry anybody could want.

So, I repeat. I'm glad Merlin is a family show.
