A Perfect Summation

I spotted a bumper sticker yesterday that perfectly summed up why I hate religion (and spirituality in general): "Don't Worry, God's In Control!" Blech. If that's the case, then he's doing a crappy job and should retire in disgrace as quickly as possible.

Heh... Reminds me of a story that an Instructor Pilot I knew in the AF used to tell. He was teaching a Saudi Pilot how to fly and F-4. It's a typical practice during an advanced lesson to put the plane intoa flat spin and allow the student to recover. In one case a frustrated student threw up his hands and declared that "It is all in the hands of Allah" ... he failed his lesson and was subsequently reassigned to flying desks.

My favorite is that sign that's all the hell over the place that says "God's not finished speaking yet" (or somesuch drivel) my reply is... Yeah? Well neither are the voices in my head so wait your fucking turn :-)

It's an example of the double standard that it's okay to espouse spirituality and religious preference but not okay to speak out against the madness.

Of course, I say all this while discussing my son's baptism plans with the wife in order to keep the peace with the family. But, I suppose that's another example isn't it? I mean it should be perfectly acceptable for me to disagree with baptism and not expect to be shunned in some way >:-(

Sheesh. That's about the worst situation I can think of for throwing up the hands and letting god handle it. I do also agree that there is an unbelievable disparity about having to be sensitive to everybody's religious choices EXCEPT in the case of no religion. I have been told that being an atheist makes me an elitist since I think everybody who believes in god is under some sort of delusion (which is kind of true), but it’s somehow NOT elitist to say “Since I’m a [whatever], I am God’s chosen people and everybody else is going to hell”. What’s that all about??
