bustedflush posted a link to an article on a Serie A website which can be found
here. I'll let you take a moment to read it and gather your own opinions on the matter.
My opinion? Well first off, the woman is clearly delusional. It as if the first sentence could say, "I am not racist, but..." because that is really what she is doing. I know that there are a lot of people who don't like Mario's attitude and I for one have criticized him too. But never in my life will I say that he deserves to be abused based on the color of his skin. It is simply wrong on all levels. She is merely trying to say, "oh it is wrong, look how good I am for saying it is wrong" yet in the next sentence berates Mario. Has he been a cocky, arrogant, and an annoyance. Yes. But how many players have been? Take for example Ronaldo, Zlatan, Mutu, and countless others. Ronaldo has never been given racist chants because while he may be a shade of orange, he is still white. Unfortunately Zlatan and Mutu have had chants, those who call them terrible names for their heritage. So yes, it is not just Mario who has had it in Italy, there have been countless others.
But lets take a look at Italian players. There is a comment to this piece by someone who clearly needs to take a step back. Where did they get this kid from in the first place - the streets? Even Giorgio Chiellini, who I know was brought-up in a tough world, doesn't act as crazy as Balotelli, nor Marco Materazzi. Actually, Mario was brought up in a fairly wealthy, white family. However, he has not always been a petulant brat. Contrary to ideas, he has had a good attitude before but when you throw in racist chants and people like the U-21 coach blaming it on him, of course he's going to become a bit of an ass. I don't excuse his attitude BUT I do understand why he might be like he is. I know if someone constantly threatened me and made me feel inferior, I'd be the same way.
Speaking of, Materazzi has had some poor attitudes in the past. What about Chiellini, is he a saint? Cassano, Totti, etc. they've all had poor attitudes in the past yet no one is talking badly about them. Why? Well because they're white of course. How silly of me to forget. They are all internationally known and some captains and yet how many of them have had red cards for poor sportsmanship? Exactly. Poor attitudes happen all the time in football. It doesn't matter if you are white, Asian, black, or Middle Eastern, you have a bad attitude and people won't like you. We get that.
There is a difference between dislike and hate though. Disliking someone for their attitude is fine. Disliking someone based on race but blaming it on something else is not. Susy you are no better then the Juve fans. You are merely stating that they have a right to say horrible things because Mario needs to grow up. Fine, fair enough, but is his attitude really the center of attention? What happens if he cleans it up and there are still racist chants because I guarantee you, there will be, then what? What can you blame on then. "Oh he provoked them because he said something in the media about their team." Again, people say things all the time to rile up other teams. That doesn't make it okay to throw out the racism card. It never will be okay.
I have so much to say on this issue but I feel like I am beating a dead horse. Racism will never go away. I know it is not the same thing but it is like blaming a rape victim, "well she was dancing provocatively and wearing slutty clothes" or a gay bashing, "we don't like gay people and he was in the wrong place, acting all girly." These people don't choose to have violence happen to them nor should they. It's time the world opens their eyes and realizes that WE are the ones that have to stop it. If we don't, it will always continue.
