The basics
For the benefit of myself (I like lists) and everyone else, heres a basic outline of the impression I am working towards and the items that I need.
My basic first person impression is going to be of Leontas, a 19 year old Spartiate who has just graduated from the Agoge. Im aiming for a date of somewhere during the Greco-Persian Conflict- 490-479 (Optimally Plataea)
I choose to do this particular impression because most of my research has centered on the Spartan civilization, and its what I know the most about. Secondly, it allows me to debunk some of the main Spartan Myths (Lambda on the shields, Kaiadas, leather jock strap armor etc). Thirdly, although im 27, I look like im 16 (ive caught crap at WWII events about this) plus, I dont have either long hair and I think my boss would think I was really weird if I started growing a traditional Spartan beard without a moustache.
Ive decided to do the Greco Persian conflict mostly because its one of the main areas of my research into ancient Greek Warfare, secondly, because it was such a momentous conflict, and thirdly, well, because I think its cool. Since Im doing a Spartan impression, it means that I cant do Marathon, so that pretty much leaves Thermopylae or Platea. Well, not only is my impression a bit too young for one of the men at Thermopylae (if you take Plutarch's story about Leonidas only taking men with sons at face value) but I think it would be kind of pretentious to try and portray one of the 'elite' of the Kings bodyguard (or one of the 900 helots for that matter). So therefore, I am working towards something around the battle of Plataea. It means I would have been one of 5,000 (or so) men, and it makes it a lot more acceptable to be 'so-and-so third guy from the right when dealing with 5,000 men instead of 300.
The basic equipment I will be needing to make/buy/steal/convert/whatever is as follows:
Corinthian Helmet, preferrably with earlier closed ears and black and white or black and red crest
Bell Curiass, Muscle Curiass, or Linothorax
Chinton, or basic tunic
Greaves
Triboun or cloak
Kopis or Xyphon
Aspis (shield)
Dory
The extra stuff that I want to have are as follows
Canteen and cup
mess gear
lamps and a few personal items
haversack of some sort to carry all this crap in
