Too Much Rain

Beat Heavy Rain for the PS3. Finally.

A murder-mystery game with four main characters -- a father, an FBI agent, a journalist, and a PI -- and the case of the Origami Killer. Over time, the bad guy has systematically taken young boys and used the rainy season to drown them. When dad Ethan Mars has his son, Shaun Mars, in the same situation, he goes to every desperate measure and takes every risk -- thrown at him by the psychotic killer -- in order to rescue him. FBI agent, Norman Jayden, and PI, Scott Shelby, also follow the case, while journalist Madison Paige finds herself wrapped up in it almost by accident.

Also, there's sex, drug abuse, gun-fights, a lot of cussing, strip-teasing, little kids being killed and making you cry, shower scenes, more than just one lunatic who wants to kill you, drowning in cars, running across roofs, driving down the wrong way on the freeway, cutting off fingers, drinking poison, awkward kissing (really, Scott and Lauren?), playing with these really cool sunglasses that are also killing you, and button-pressing. A lot of button-pressing.

Oh, and death. Obviously.

Quite epic. Review follows.

I got it a few months back, but admittedly stopped halfway through because I managed to kill one of the characters -- Norman Jayden, whom I had grown kind of fond of. It was when that happened that I learned about the whole "no restarts" and "let the game be like real life" philosophy that Quantic Dream was going for, which was very cool and all, except that I wanted to restart. So I pouted and left the game alone for awhile, thinking that my only options were to keep going or to start the whole thing over again.

As it is, though, there's this handy chapter sequence where you can go straight to a chapter you've completed and do it again. It's probably for those who beat the game, but then want to see alternate endings, but overall, I was very grateful for it. I went back to where I accidentally killed the FBI cop, didn't kill him this time, and then flew through to the ending.

And I didn't cheat! ...Well, not that much. When I saw that Madison Paige and Ethan Mars could become romantically involved (and what a sex scene! True, the snogging prelude was slightly awkward with such clay-like graphics, but damn), the girl inside me went squee and just had to know if there would be an ending where the two lived happily ever after. I didn't expect there would be -- it's a murder-mystery game, where the ones dying are kids, for god's sake, and there's a good number of scenes that led me to tears -- but there is, and I was happy.

From then on, I vaguely used a guide so that I could achieve that ending, and I did it, so props. Sort of.

So, a good game. The characters lived (after some minor adjustments) and the bad guy didn't. Shaun Mars was saved and he got new parents (who are going to have a great sex life). Usually, I panic during quick-time events, which is pretty much what the game consisted of, because it's stressful to hit the right buttons in time and, if you don't, you curse and then proceed to screw up again before finally just throwing the controller across the room, scaring the hell out of your dog to the point that she starts barking at you, so you then start cursing at her, and...

Well, you get what I mean.

But I did all right with this one. And it is a mystery; that's why I got it to begin with, regardless of gameplay. And even though the mystery itself destroyed your heartstrings at some points, it was very well done. Props to Quantic Dream. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Side-note: I've always hated origami. I can't do it. Paper just does not want to fold properly for me. I even remember when my elementary school had an origami fair, just a few hours of being taught how to make cute little figures; I listened to the instructions, tried it for five minutes, before throwing my attempts away and proceeding to pout. To me, origami is shapes and shapes, in turn, is math. Therefore, hate.

Now to hang out in bed and enjoy the gray weather we're having today, nursing a headache and apparently a fever as well. Go me.
