Holy crap, I never realized this, until now that is, why the word percent means what it means. I'm aware many english words are derived from latin as well as words from several other languages, and that there is a lot of over lappage going on, and I'm not quite sure why I think it's so awesome this time out of all the other times, although I will say I pretty much always had that moment where I'd go, "ooooohhhh" (and you know you did too) all the other times it's been brought to my attention, more than likely by a teacher, but not necessarily, and it was rad then, too. Perhaps it's because I discovered it all on my own, or, more than likely, because I am incredibly tired, but nevertheless, I am amused, and that, my friend, is all that matters. I have also realized that I have been using an inordinate number of commas, and using some words quite repititively ( I have attempted to fix some of them, but I kind of lost interest because it really doesn't matter). So, back to the derivation of the word "percent." In Italian, it is per cento cento being 100.

per·cent also per cent
adv.
Out of each hundred; per hundred.

n.
pl. percent, also per cent One part in a hundred: The report states that 42 percent of the alumni contributed to the endowment. Also called per centum.

I'm aware it's obvious, but I guess I just never really thought about it. Okay, I feel stupid now.
