Friday Fanfic Recs

I missed last week on my recs--and the sad thing is, I don't even have a good excuse. I just got distracted. -__-;; Mea culpa!

Sadly, only one new Transformers rec this week ... :( Good thing I'm a fic-omnivore!

Transformers:
Fear of Falling, by razordragonfly
Fic Quote: It seemed the most logical thing in the world to Prowl: capture a Decepticon Seeker, tame it, train it, and use it in his work. Seekers were big Decepticons and strong fliers, and Prowl's research led him to believe that they were good trackers as well, and although temperamental by nature they could be made into loyal companions. Tired of having to subdue his bail-jumpers himself, and after one particular incident that laid him up in medical for almost an orn, Prowl made his decision to give it a try.

Worksafe. A very intriguing AU, where Cybertron is at peace, the Autobots the dominant species, and Decepticons are simply animals. Or are they? Fair warning: this is another fic that I dithered about whether or not I would rec. Despite the cracktastic premise, it is *very* well written, and engaging--but it is also very dark, and not always a comfortable read. This is one of those fics that makes you think: about where the dividing line between 'animals' and 'people' might be, and at what point does one creature have the right to break another to its will. This is also not a 'and they lived happily ever after' fic--the ending has hope, but makes no promises.

That said, I love how the author refuses to make Prowl the villain of this piece--it would have been so, so easy to fall into the 'evil slavemaster' trope, a la Uncle Tom's Cabin, and bring out the whips and chains, but she never does. This instead is very much a case of the road to hell being paved with good intentions, and unlike most people, Prowl has the moral fortitude to do what needs to be done to make things right in the end ....

Iron Man/Captain America (comics):
Sex, Lies and Newsprint by Nightwalker
Fic Quote: "Steve leaned back against the side of the ring-toss booth and offered Tony a sheepish grin. "This isn't quite what I had in mind, to be honest," he admitted. He looked like a kid: nose and ears turning pink from the sun, hair tousled from the wind and the rollercoaster. He had cotton candy on his shirt, Tony noticed.

"Really?" Tony asked. "Because when you said, 'Hey, Tony, come to Coney Island with me, we deserve a day off' this is exactly what I saw happening." A wooden carousel horse flew by overhead and crashed to the ground a few feet behind Tony, showering them with dust and wooden splinters. Tony scrubbed his hands through his hair, combing out the odd piece of wood. "Honestly, this isn't quite as bad as I was expecting. One rampaging super-powered teenager is practically nothing."

Worksafe. This fic is set in the Marvel Adventures universe, which is aimed at the younger crowd--which means less angst and more fun for our favorite heroes. :) This fic is very adorable; a minor bit of angst and a somewhat clueless Tony, plus the obligatory mutant rampage, makes for interesting true confessions!

Iron Man/Captain America (movies):
Something New, by Tsukinofaerii
Author Summary: Tony is a man with a plan. A groggy, not really awake man, but he has a plan. Funny thing is, so does Steve.

Worksafe. Irredeemable fluff, but you can't go wrong the way Tsukinofaerii writes it. :D A very amusing example of how genius billionaire superheroes can dither about proposing marriage just as much as the next guy ...

Sherlock (BBC)
The Bewlay Brothers, by Laura JV
Fic Quote: John kills a man, eats dim sum with Sherlock Holmes, returns to his bare little room, and has a wank for the first time since the day before he was shot in Afghanistan. He feels alive; he can feel blood pounding in his veins and he thinks we're two of a kind, Sherlock and me. We get off on death. He's alone with four changes of clothes, two paperbacks, his dirty gun, and that thought.

The next day, he packs up his room and moves to Baker Street.

Worksafe. Probably one of the best examples of a BAMF!John that I've ever read. This is a fic that shows how John just *seems* like the normal one of the partnership--when in reality he really, really isn't. And yet he still holds on to a firm ethical code in spite it all, and balances out Sherlock perfectly ...

Contamination, by Laura JV
Author summary: In which an artistic murder draws Irene Adler and her brother Nathan into the lives of Lestrade and Holmes, and Dr John Watson balances his morals against the happiness that is a warm gun.

Not worksafe, for case-related serial killer gruesomeness. Casefic, very amazingly crafted. The switching POVs in this story are what really make it interesting; it's not just John and Sherlock chasing a serial killer, but other people's reactions as well that make this fic a very compelling read.

Sherlock Holmes (movie):
Clever Woman, Doctor's Wife, by lalaietha
Fic quote: "To be a woman," Aunt Emma said, as she came back from the other room with the lamp and set it on the side table, "is to be caught in a war you didn't start, and can't see the end of." She sat down as Mary finished pouring their tea and took her own cup.

This is a series rec--most of the stories are worksafe, but a few are not. This is probably the best set of Mary Morstan-centric fics I've ever read, and a very intriguing take on how Mary would fit into the boys-club partnership that is Sherlock and Watson. It also deals quite a bit on the restrictions imposed on woman in the Victorian era, and how, unlike Sherlock, a clever woman was not necessarily benefited by showing just how intelligent she really was ... and how even that can change when dealing with Sherlock Holmes.

captain america, sherlock, transformers, iron man, recs
