UNIT Head Office Washington D.C. United States of America Earth (a.k.a. Pax Delta 9385hf8k) Milky Way Solar System Year: 2004
Brigadier Sir Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart was a very intimidating man. A man of about eighty years old, he had a shock of pure white hair that peeked from under the hat of his official dress UNIT uniform. He strode with a purpose. Still sharp eyes scanned for any potential threats. Cross him, it appeared and you were dead without a second thought.
UNIT officers, young and old, scrambled out of the way as he marched down the corridor. All of them looked at him with varying degrees of shock, awe, and confusion. The confusion was mainly directed to the young man walking besides the Brigadier talking easily and lightly like they were old friends. The younger of the two appeared to be in his early twenties. His brown hair bounced around as he gestured with enthusiasm about whatever it was he was telling the older man. He was dressed as a civilian with a pair of khakis, a cream patterned shirt, a burgundy tie with a matching sweater vest. A brown leather satchel was around his shoulder.
The Brigadier stopped suddenly. The young man surprised by the act did as well.
“Doctor is there any point to this?” asked the elder in a clipped British accent
The young man seemed to be in deep thought for a moment before shaking his head in the negative.
“I don’t think so, Alistair,” replied the man in an American one, “Apparently in this form I talk constantly when I am nervous.”
“Explain to me why you want to do this again, Doctor? We could get you a high up job within UNIT. Why are you going out to do civilian work?”
“Alistair,” began the Doctor, “this is my eleventh body out of thirteen. It’s as good of time as any to settle down and enjoy this regeneration. The universe will always need saving. It will be there for my next regeneration to take care of. For this one I just want to try something different.”
“But the FBI, Doctor?”
“The Behavioral Analysis Unit is as good of a place as any. If I base myself in the UK then there is a very good chance that Hartman would get me. Jack isn’t supposed to meet me again for several years. Martha and Donna don’t even KNOW who I am. Rose is…”
The Doctor paused sadly, “She’s not supposed to meet me yet. And never like this. If I stay there I would just brood. This will give me a chance to have all the excitement in the world with being able to have people who will stay. I want friends, Alistair. I want people who don’t know what’s out there up in the stars. I want to give a grounded life a chance. I’ll still save the universe just on my vacation time.”
Alistair sighed and nodded.
“I supposed if anyone deserves that chance then it’s you, Doctor. I wish you all the luck in the world. Here are your files. We have a complete background fabrication done. People will remember your human identity. Doctorates and bachelors are in your new name. The TARDIS has been safely placed in your new domicile. I assume that you will be living out of her?”
The Doctor grinned widely, “I can’t let the old girl get lonely now.”
“You start work on Monday. Files of your coworkers have been included for you to read. Your kitchen is fully stocked. We have also set up a bank account in your name and included a generous amount of money as compensation for all the work you have done for us.”
The younger looking man smiled and held out his hand, “Thank you, Alistair. You have always been a good friend.”
The elder man gripped the offered hand and shook it gravely, “I only wish that I could do more, old friend. If there is anything else and I mean anything then please give me a call. UNIT will be more than happy to help with any other accommodations. A car is waiting for you to take you to Quantico.”
“I know.”
“Good luck, Doctor.”
“Please Alistair call me by my new name.”
“Why choose it?”
“It was the one that the dart had landed on.”
The Brigadier laughed deep and booming, “Still the same as ever! The best of luck to you then, Doctor Spencer Reid.”
Reid could only grin and opened the door. He stepped out into the bright sunlight and breathed in the air around him. It smelled like endless possibilities, new beginnings, and adventures stretched out endlessly before him.
He loved the beginnings. Whistling the Doctor strolled over to the car that would take him to his new home. He was eager to find out exactly what this new form was like.
“The best part of the endless story that is life are the beginnings.” -Unknown
