Sweets always suspected that there was something a bit strange about his boyfriend. No he is not talking about appearances. To be honest, Sweets loved Merlin’s odd sense of style with the constantly changing color tips of his hair, the skinny jeans, the assorted colors of Converses’, and the slightly too short shirts that lifted up just right when Merlin had to stand on his tip toes.
He thanked every deity he could think of for those shirts. They really brightened up his day.
Then there were Merlin’s eccentricities. He could quote Shakespeare at the drop of the hat and then forget how to operate the microwave. He knew ancient dances and could grind as well as the next person. He could weave stories and not know how to figure out the expensive calculator that he owned. He kept crystals around the apartment and kept a switchblade in the draw beside his bed. He just knew things.
He was fine with the fashion and the eccentricities. Really actually those were what made him love Merlin all the more.
No there was just something the slightest bit off about his boyfriend. It was in a good way of course. The slightest hint of a bad vibe and Sweets would have left in an instant.
He had no idea what it was though. It puzzled him for weeks.
It was just little things of course. Such as Merlin had given him a flower two weeks again and it was still in perfect bloom, no hint of brown on the petals, no sign of wilting…it was just as perfect as the day Merlin had it sent to his office.
Then he just seemed a little bit luckier. Just small things like getting the last cinnamon bun at his favorite coffee shop, getting a green light when he was running late, finding ten bucks on the streets…just little things that made his life easier or brightened his day.
It had a trend of starting after he and Merlin began to date. Now there was no sex to be had. This was Sweets’ first gay relationship and Merlin respected it, letting the psychiatrist find his own footing.
Of course he did not really expect this about his boyfriend.
No one really be prepared for this sort of revelation.
Merlin is frozen. His golden eyes were wide and the various cleaning equipment was frozen in midair.
“What…on earth?”
“Lance!” said Merlin nervously. Sweets heard an audible gulp. “Look I meant to tell you.”
“That you are psychic?”
“Erm…kind of? I kind of have magic.”
Sweets nodded even though his mind was racing trying to comprehend it. The proof was right in front of him. It was indisputable, really. Plates were floating by his head.
Really how freaking cool was that?
Merlin was standing there, rubbing the back of his neck.
“So…were you named for powers or…?”
“Erm well Lance I don’t know how to tell you this but um…I am Merlin. The Merlin.”
Sweets was basically a human lie detector. It was easier than pie if you knew what you were looking for. And Merlin was a hundred percent telling the truth.
Well doesn’t this just say everything about his love life?
“…alright let’s say that I believe you. Merlin I’m a man of science. I need proof.”
Merlin nodded for a moment. He closed his eyes and held out the palm of his hand. Sweets moved closer to observe it. He took a step back in amazement and shock as a lily formed in the center of Merlin’s palm. Sweets gently picked up the flower that formed from air.
“Whoa. That’s totally awesome.”
Merlin grinned and his now golden eyes shone brightly.
“How long have you been alive?”
“Erm a really really long time?”
“How long is that?”
“Erm about a millennia and a half.”
“You look good for your age?”
“You’re taking this remarkably well.”
“I suspect that I will have a major freak out later. But right now since I’m still calm I think that I’m up to hear a story.”
As if saying ‘Open Sesame’, Merlin began spilling out everything. He talked about Ealdor, having to keep his magic hidden, Camelot, the oppressive reign of Uther, Gaius, Gwen, Morgana…
He talked a lot about Arthur. Sweets could tell there was some history there.
He listened as his boyfriend talked about living through the centuries. Helping the reincarnated king when he needed his help…how few those times were. He talked about the few lovers he had over the ages (all male).
He went out with Shakespeare. Can you believe that?
Four hours later, Merlin seemed drained emotionally. Sweets shuffled not sure what to do, how he will measure.
After all Merlin was in love with a king, a legend. How could he compete with that?
The sorcerer sensed his discomfort. Sweets felt skinny arms snake their way around his waist. He was pulled back.
“You make me so happy sometimes, Lance, that I actually start flying. Only two other people could do that: Will and Arthur. Lance, I love you. I don’t take many lovers over the years. I think last count I had was maybe twenty. Trust me when I say this, Lance Sweets. You are stuck with me for a very, very long time.”
“The rest of my life?” murmured out the doctor.
Sweets was scared. They had only been together for a few weeks. Yet the intensity in which he loved this man frightened him. It bewildered him. It snuck up and wormed its way into his heart.
He never have felt this way about anyone in his life.
“Most definitely,” agreed Merlin.
They kissed. Sweets could feel the zing of magic through his mouth. As they pulled away he looked down and gasped.
They were floating several inches from the couch.
He could feel Merlin chuckle.
Sweets smiled. Maybe he could definitely get used to magic in his life.
