The Olympic Spirit

Obama and McCain are both pursuing an unprecedented ad strategy by investing 5+ million dollars in advertising for the Olympics. Obama made the decision first, prompting McCain to react with a comparable (but more expensive) late ad buy.

Obama unveiled his ad yesterday afternoon. It is easily one of the best positive spots I've ever seen. It's professional and optimistic with a focus on themes of national unity and cooperation, a good fit for the Olympics.

People were wondering how McCain intended to respond to this, and whether he would go with one of his traditional bio ads or try to do what Obama did and present a vision of a 'McCain economy.' As it turns out, he chose neither.

Instead, as viewers found out last night, he spent 6 million dollars to air some cheap-o attack ads calling Obama a 'celebrity' and accusing him of being indifferent to suffering families. It's hard to believe a professional campaign could make such a tone deaf move and run such a dissonant, xenophobic jab during an event that's intended to promote a sense of unity and cooperation.
