I rarely eat out! At university, most of my meals are homecooked meals and when I do get to eat out, it is rare and special.
It's important to keep track of how much you eat, you have no idea how much you really eat unless you count all the calories. It's not about restricting your food choices, as much as limiting the intake of what you eat. You could eat icecream and still lose weight, if you didn't go over your daily intake of calories you could eat icecream and not gain a pound.

The main thing is to choose foods that are low in calorie and eat a lot of of it, so that you feel full. Unfortunately, most of the these foods are vegetable (however I'm a veggie lover) and fruit and to boot most americans don't eat raw vegatable and fruit. Most americans eat a lot of dairy (high in calories compared to the amount you eat).
I was reading in my book on veganism that it takes only 1.4 lbs of cheddar cheese to reach 2,500 calories. Ham it takes 2.1 lbs, fried chicken 2.2 lbs, brown rice 4.6 lbs, apples 9.4 lbs, carrots 13.0 lbs and Peaches 16.6 lbs.
Just imagine how much people would lose if they cut back on their dairy intake per day? LOTS!

So I wonder.. do you notice a diffence in the eating habits of your Canadian peers in college, or Canadians as a whole? Or does the American model seem to fit in Canada too (especially love of red meat)? During my several trips up to Canada it tends to seem like an extention of the US, even somewhat in the small mostly French-speaking towns in Quebec. I also notice that French Canadians tend to be crazy drivers, but that's another story...
