1. Name a novelist, a poet, and a playwright you like.
Charlotte Bronte, Algernon Swinburne and Shakespeare.
2. Name a novelist, a poet, and a playwright you don't like.
James Joyce, Browning, Samuel Beckett
3. Name a book you have read more than three times.
Jane Eyre
4. Name a book you couldn't finish.
To the Lighthouse (amongst a good few others)
5. Name a book you would recommend to anybody. Say why.
Jane Eyre. Bildungsroman, romance, mystery, engaging characters. The Phantom of the Opera. Usually encountered as a child or in some other format as an adult. Try the book again. There's an awful lot there to appreciate, and a truly fascinating character in Erik.
6. Name a book you would consign to the Eternal Dustbin. Say why.
Leaving aside truly awful books, one 'classic' I could do without is 'The Catcher in the Rye'. I just found it self-indulgent and aggravating.
7. Name a film adaptation of a work of literature that you thought was really well done.
I thought the film version of Emma was well done. TV-wise, Brideshead Revisited is perfect.
8. Ditto, badly done.
Recent Jane Eyre wasn't too clever.
9. What is/are your Christmas book/s?
Little Women & Good Wives
