Mayfield has rendered a lot of things useless. Life, death, sanity, free will… all in an attempt to get us to submit to their whims, I'd imagine. They win when we're permanently droned into submission.

Exactly. They win. All we can do is wait. It doesn't matter what we do here - live, die, play nice, act up - in the end they can still do whatever they want to us. So if someone really wants to die here, why stop them. It means as much as any other action. Death isn't cured, just made meaningless.
