so you think you can dance: season overview
man, i've been meaning to write this for weeks. apparently i am so lazy that hunting for youtube videos seems daunting. i doubt anyone will read this since few of you watch this show, but i actually recommend that you watch some of the videos even if you don't watch (especially if you like dance) . . . there is some pure crazy here. tiffany and i just take the show for granted, but whenever you make someone unfamiliar with the show watch the best dances on youtube, we realize anew how very weird some of this shit really is. you've got to love a show that makes americans suffer through WALTZES and FOXTROTS. not to mention truly bizarre jazz routines.
my first fav dance of the season - caitlin and jason dancing bollywood. unfortunately it's to that jai ho song, but we can't always get what we want. caitlin has some insane upper body strength, check out that handstand.
ok. here is one of the aforementioned absolutely bizarre jazz routines, in which kupono and ashley are crash test dummies. please note how much ashley is made up to look like portia de rossi. this routine is one of the only reasons why i like kupono, who is not nearly as strong as he should be
melissa and ade surprised me with their chemistry and great dancing. i'm a little sad they won't be partnered anymore. (yes, melissa did annoy me at first with her stupid "naughty ballerina" thing, but i'm so happy that a ballerina is on this show at all . . . ) i do tend to like sonya's routines in general and this is no exception.
AUGH, MY FAVORITE COUPLE! i just loved janette and brandon and i wish they could dance together all season. i so did not expect to like either of them (janette and her tootie hair, brandon and his smug smile), but they won me over on pure talent. this disco routine is insanely fast, and i normally hate disco.
i can't believe max got eliminated because of this jazz dance. it's INSANE. i think it was homosexual panic that got him eliminated, personally. they couldn't handle his little genie outfit. kayla is one of my favorites - one of our ladies night participants hate her, possibly because of the trashy blonde thing, which i love. look at what they did to her eyelashes for this routine!
i usually don't care for the group routines, but this one by mia michaels was pretty cool.
janette and brandon again, doing hip hop! oh my god, her outfit. at ladies night, someone screamed "i want her stockings!" as soon as she popped up on screen.
does anyone else think nigel's remarks about hip hop are incredibly racist?
sorry, this one has the incredibly annoying credit sequence in it. this is evan and randi's mia michaels routine which is all about evan "worshiping the booty". yes. this is what i mean when i say this show is weird.
i don't actually like this caitlin/jason paso doble very much, i am only posting this because LOOK AT THE OUTFITS. tiffany yelled "THEY'RE LARPING" when we saw them, and, well. IT'S TRUE. i can't decide which outfit is worse, fake princess leia sex slave or super gay purple cape gladiator. i really do think the costumer hates caitlin - she's had to wear the weirdest shit so far.
oh my god, of course this fucking routine is inspired by twilight. i KNEW sonya was a twilight fan. you know, i never thought i'd say this, but i'm really tired of vampires. still, this routine is pretty awesome. EVEN IF IT IS DANCED TO A SONG FROM THE TWILIGHT MOVIE. way to go there, sonya.
nobody liked this, including the judges, but i do! this is caitlin and jason's weird alien-impregnating-last-man-on-earth routine. it's kind of indescribable and you should watch it, even if you don't watch this show in general. i love the look on her face when bryan friedman explains what the dance is about.
here is melissa and ade's pas de deux, included only because it's the first time they've done ballet on the show. i kind of wish they'd picked something a little more interesting than this.
can someone who knows ballet tell me if melissa is technically good? to me she does look good, but what do i know about turnout, etc.
and here is a contemporary ballet routine, in which one sees professional dancers. quite a contrast to even the best dancers on this show.
i'm including jeanine's solo because i really loved it.
and phillip's solo because, while it is sad that this was the only dancing he could really do, he really was fantastic at it.
melissa and ade doing disco. unfortunately any disco routine will suffer in comparison to janette and brandon's, but i kind of love that she falls down at the end. and ade is surprisingly great at shimmying and wearing shiny pants.
kayla and kupono doing a mia michaels routine about addiction. it's surprisingly powerful and kupono finally brought it. oh kupono, you want to be mark so bad.
this is one of the worst dances i have seen on this show. jeanine and philip doing russian folk dancing - poor guys! i don't think this is their fault, but it definitely contributed to phillip getting kicked off.
in contrast, this is one of the BEST dances i've seen on this show - janette and brandon doing argentinean tango. it's amazing. just fucking amazing.
i really hate tasty oreo. i can't be the only one. ORANGE JUICE?
eee, and their awesome wade robson jazz routine where they are JEWEL THIEFS or something similarly insane.
ade's excellent solo.
top 10:
- melissa: clearly she's very talented, but she did have the equally talented ade as a partner - i'm kind of afraid she'll lose her way if she gets a bad partner or one that she doesn't have chemistry with.
- kupono: i want him to be better than he actually is. in a way it was frustrating when he was partnered with kayla, because she was just so much better than he is. on the other hand, it does seem like he is improving.
- kayla: she's not going anywhere - i suspect she'll get partnered with evan because all the other girls are taller than him and i think they do rig it so that doesn't happen.
- evan: again, like kupono, he's not as good as i want him to be. :( i think the other brother is more talented. btw, other brother better make it on to the next season or i will grow very angry. evan just hasn't brought it, i think he's been saved by having randi as his partner.
- randi: hopefully she'll get a partner that can bring out her sexy side, so she can stop relying on being little and cute. personally i like that she is short and doesn't have the typical long and skinny dancer build, but i think it made it hard for her to do some dances, especially with evan.
- jason: he needs to step it up. he's capable of so much more than he's shown us, as we saw in his first solo.
- jeanine: she is great and a huge surprise for me - i wasn't expecting much out of her. of course, she was limited by phillip (i mean, i do love him, but . . . he just wasn't very good) so i think she could go really far if she gets a good partner . . . maybe brandon?
- brandon: he is so good it is almost boring, if you know what i mean. i have no worries for him.
- janette: i actually think she is nearly as good as brandon herself, so i'm also not worried about her. i doubt she'll get partnered with ade but i could see that working really well.
