DAMN.
My favorites:
be all my sins remembered - This is the Shakespearean AU that I wrote for
elrhiarhodan. It's the longest continuous story I've ever written (the Broken Road and piercing!kink series come close, but they're pretty broken up). I've never worked harder on a story before. I had a ton of fun doing the research for this fic - and while I know that it's rife with inaccuracies, I know that there are little bits of it that wouldn't have happened without the facts I picked up while researching. This is also the only fic where I dealt with infidelity in a serious way. Peter and Neal don't just fall in love, Peter cheats on his wife with Neal. And I think I wrote that well! The other thing I love about this fic is how completely it's in Peter's POV - it's my only fic for which I've ever considered writing a companion piece, because I think it'd be an entirely different story in Neal's POV. All of my other long pieces switch narrators pretty regularly.
love is not a battlefield (i am no hercules) - So before this fic, I'd written a lot of hurt/comfort that was heavy on the hurt with a tacked-on comfort epilogue. I had a sort of block about writing the healing process. I thought it was boring. I tried tackling it with the
Broken Road series, but that kind of morphed into a prolonged reveal of more and more pain. ...not exactly what I'd intended to do. I wrote hercules as part of a fundraiser for RAINN, and I thought that that required a more sensitive - and realistic - treatment of PTSD. That's the big motivation behind why I wrote it.
The breakthrough I had with the content of this fic is that it...for some reason, I hadn't ever really united the work that I'm interested in academically with the writing I've been doing. I've done a shit-ton of research into Ancient Greek drama - specifically how it relates to trauma, veterans, and PTSD (if anyone's interested, Johnathon Shay's book Achilles in Vietnam is an amazing introduction into the subject). This is the first fic I wrote that was solidly in my comfort zone as an academic as well as a writer. I'm quite proud of it. :-)
Porn I'm very proud of:
the one with all of the buttplugs,
the one with the buttplug in the restaurant,
the one with the dildo and the DP,
the one with the dildo and unconscious sex,
the one with the ice dildo,
the one with the pervertibles,
the one with the strap-ons, and
the one with the watersports.
And that's about half of the porn I've written.
\o/
I've read fanfic since I was a wee little girl. I even wrote some Harry Potter fic (of which I am utterly ashamed, and which will hopefully never resurface to haunt me later in my life). White Collar isn't the first show I've wanted to write for, but the White Collar fandom is the first one that's ever drawn me in. And, like
elrhiarhodan, I have to credit
photoash with being the reason that I started writing and kept writing. Her encouragement and friendship has been such an amazing gift. Her cheerleading is the reason I finished the Broken Road and Piercing series, and continues to keep me coming back to my keyboard. Thank you!
elrhiarhodan has been...honestly, I don't even know what to say. Her writing, dedication, intellect, and generosity of spirit inspire me. Thank you for being the wonderful woman that you are.
I really really want to thank all of you individually and publically here, but I know that when I read those lists of other peoples, I generally am just nervous about whether or not I'll be on there - and I don't want to leave off anybody, because that just sucks. So here's what I can say that I want to say to all of you: thank you. You guys (the people I've met in person, the people on my flist, the people who comment, the people who just read, the people who navigated here accidentally and are very very confused) are the the reason I wrote 170k this past year - the reason I returned to writing at all.
This community of people has been welcoming, supportive, and generous. I have comment notifications I got when I posted freak-outs about grad school interviews, the congratulations when I posted (with an embarrasing number of exclamation points) that I'd been accepted, the commiseration when I got overwhelmed, right up to the 'break a leg' notes when my first show had its opening night. You guys were there when my mother had her health scare over the summer, you were there when I was almost too depressed to post anything at all, and you've been there to squee with me when I've been at my highest. I can only hope that I've been able to return some measure of what you guys have given me.
I'm leaving 2010 a happier, more confident person. And a lot of that is because of you guys.
Thank you.
Here's to a 2011 full of fic, friendship, and Neal doing everything Peter tells him to do!
Love,
B
