Room 308, Monday Morning

Jul 23, 2012 09:09

Tony had paused in his work on a gauntlet long enough to listen to the announcements. He closed his eyes, rubbing at his eyes with the hand that was least filthy from work.

Just another week on the island.

He did not have enough caffeine in his system to deal with this right now. He could pencil in that burgeoning moral crisis for later.

Victor had done all the data processing there was to do -- nothing much, though he'd red-flagged the radio broadcast for not making any goddamned sense -- and was going on a patrol through the dorms to check for any obvious signs of resistance.

He hesitated at Tony Stark's door. Any version of Tony was a bit of a wild card, but this one seemed like he had his head on straight -- even if Topher didn't like him much. He poked his head in.

"Hey," he said. "What are you working on?"

"Project," he replied, setting the gauntlet next to him in the bed. "I can't always depend on the kindness of my friends if I'm attacked, you know."

Really. Only reason to build an extremely high tech weapon that he wore as armor.

"We'd protect you," Victor said, stepping through the door. "Nobody wants anyone on the right side to die. Anyhow, I don't think the little rebels have much in the way of weaponry these days."

His eyes flickered over the gauntlet with more than casual interest.

"They're resourceful," Tony reminded him sharply. Then took a breath and rubbed the back of his neck to clear that burst of emotion. Now was really not the time. "The sooner we can bring them in, the sooner people stop getting hurt in the crossfire. This will help speed that up."

"It looks like it could," Victor said, with the slightest hint of unease at Tony's reaction. He didn't trust strong emotion. "They could just make things so much easier on themselves, is all I'm saying."

"Trust me, I know," Tony said with a sigh. "But they're all too stubborn to see that what they're doing is just delaying the inevitable."

Ah, the inevitable. Which was, of course, the triumph of Victorious.

But Victor knew that wasn't what Tony meant.

"They've been fighting this fight for five years," he said. "But who knows? Maybe we'll be the ones who put an end to it."

"Who knows," Tony echoed. "What did you need?"

"Honestly?" Victor told him. "Today's my free day. I was just seeing if anybody else wasn't doing anything."

He frowned. "But did you listen to radio this morning? It didn't make any sense."

"No, I was coding until... Maybe fifteen minutes ago. What did they say?"

"A bunch of garbage," Victor answered. "Names I don't recognize, and then some fantasy about Jonothon Starsmore's birthday party. I tried to figure out if it was a code, but I'm not getting anything if it is one."

"Could just be the island," Tony suggested. "Starsmore is in detention."

"Right, that's why I called it garbage," Victor said. "Maybe Cara's losing it. I'm still going to keep an eye on it for anything else weird for a couple days."

"Good." Tony took a breath, running his hand through his hair. "Let me know if you need any, ah, upgrades."

"Thanks, but I'm doing fine," Victor said, a bit uneasily for entirely selfish reasons. "Why, do I seem off?"

He didn't think so, but it was hard to tell those thongs from the inside.

"No, just in case you need to get into a fight," Tony replied dryly.
