Working from home

We are not yet WFH, although last week some people in specific vulnerable groups were told to WFH and those with childcare commitments will be from Monday.

I did an audit 18 months ago on our Business Continuity Plan and Emergency Plan. These include scenarios for significant staff loss due to illness and staff not able to travel to the office. But our actual preparedness for significant numbers needing to WFH are inadequate, to say the least.

Yesterday, After dribbles of not really very useful info, we got something slightly more concrete about what happens in case of self isolating, looking after children with symptoms and having symptoms. It also clarified a few more things in relation to people who don't have childcare duties, and expectations that in households with two parents, the childcare duties would be shared while people are still expected to attend the office.

My role doesn't easily lend itself to WFH, so the boss is looking at tasks we can do remotely. We are also likely to be implementing a rota for days in the office and, hopefully, being trained to support key roles in Finance and Revs & Bens, as there is a need for certain people to be available.

My boss is a very black & White person in terms of following the constitution and regulations, but even he was getting quite ticked off with the lack of decisions by yesterday morning. Not least because he really should be in various of the meetings he's not in and hears nothing about the decisions. It's his job to look at the risks and controls. With several key senior staff WFH, he isn't able to give them the level of support he should be because he's getting info down the line.

I'm more bothered about not being able to see Ma and Pa. Bro is closer to them, but if he gets sick, I'm not close enough if they need things. I asked if I could WFH from Up North, but it would depend on whether I was likely to be called in. Living half a mile from the office has adva tages and disadvantages.

I should have spent today clearing the junk from around my desk and getting my pc in a fit state. There's no way we have enough mit at work for them to provide me with a thing. I have a laptop which has decided in the last couple of months to go slow. I haven't used my W7 desktop in years and the W10 machine is still in its box. Right now, I'm not bothered.

Training is cancelled for the duration. Our grading next Saturday has been postponed until June for now. We will be doing virtual classes and everyone will get the syllabus for their next level of training. If things carry on for more than 3 months, it will have a knock on effect on the Black belt gradings in September. All those going for their first degree will need time to practise sparring and partner work. As will those of us going for second degree. If the gradings don't happen, they will have to add an extra date in, as Black belts are only once a year. Some people are due to go to university in October and waiting another year really isn't an option. Plus it would cost almost another grand!

Anyway, we need to pull together and look after each other. With all the time I'm not grading or at the pictures, I should have a chance to help people out with things. And work on the allotment.
