Last night I called in at the surgery to get an appointment about the cold I've had since September. My appointment was at 8.40 this morning. I guess it helps that I don't care who I see and turning up in person in the evening means they can allocate any odd spaces. It also doesn't hurt that my office is 200 yards from the surgery and even if my boss wasn't on leave, I can take pretty much any slot they offer.
So the diagnosis is that I have sinusitis. The resultant irritation causes bucket loads of snot, much of which is running down my throat and causing me to cough it back up again. This in turn irritates me and anyone in a 20 yard radius and makes my throat sore. I'm not sure whether the locum got the humour about my legendary cough being raised as an agenda item at Council tomorrow night. It has certainly been commented on at SMT more than once in the last few months, but that could be because our office is directly opposite the Chief Exec's door and my hacking up gunge interrupts their meetings.
The doc prescribed me a steroidal nasal spray. It's certainly made a difference already. 12 hours after taking the first dose, I feel more alert and awake than I have done in weeks. Not particularly useful at 10.30 pm, but I'm not knocking it. If I get a decent night's kip and still feel like this in the morning, I'll be ecstatic. I've still been coughing, but definitely less than before, and my nose is less irritated and bunged up. I just wish someone might have suggested this when I went in in November to see why it wasn't going away.
