STAGE THREE: In Good Company
I have to re-write this chapter, since I accidentally replaced it with the entire 4th chapter last night...
Lowering himself to the curb, it was somewhat troubling to sit down on its low edge. He plopped down next to Adam, the boy from earlier. Rob exchanged looks with the boys who sat on the curb too, mostly smiles, some friendly quizzical looks. Behind them was Bud, who held the door open for Bethany. She smiled at him and vice-versa, she sped off with a bag full of bottle water and junk food in her sun dress and jeans. Bud quickly took a seat next to Rob and glanced at Bethany as she walked down the street; she caught him looking and daintily waved. Rob looked at him with a furrowed brow and mouth agape.
"Keep your eyes to yourself, man." He dug around in the plastic bag, pulling out a jerky stick.
"Yeah, well you just keep your jealousy to yourself then, because I'm going to Homecoming with Bethany." He posed, flexing his biceps "I suppose you all got dates, too?" And at that, everyone looked at him and laughed. Rob pat his back.
"It's alright, man, someday, someone will care." They both chuckled, Bud picked a can of soda from the bag and cracked it open.
"...I don't want to go to the dance this year." Adam said with a mouthful of chips.
"Why not?" Someone sitting next to him asked.
"Well, for one, I'm way too lazy..." He paused to allow laughter "And I don't want to go through the trouble of getting a date." One boy on the other side of him laughed aloud.
"Hey! There is no trouble with dates when it comes to Adam Okamura!" He deepened his voice for Adam's name. Another boy spoke out.
"Really. You could ask anybody... frankly, you're just awesome." A bout of chuckling went around. With everyone dateless and unable to get a date on a whim except for Adam and Bud, a conversation between all of them stirred up. Before anyone could point out, the sun went away and left a bright blue sky and darkness on its trail. Almost everyone got up to leave, Adam Bud and Rob staying behind, as Bud's house was no long walk. Adam cleared his throat, three empty bags of confections littered the ground around him.
"Bud. Can I spend the night tonight?" He leaned behind Rob, who was stuffing sponge cakes into his mouth.
"Why?" He replied.
