I know I said that snippets could very well feel like full fics to readers, and I think this is one of those! There's surely more story that could be told, but this snippet also has such a strong, full arc to it as it is. There's something extremely affecting about being told this through Sam's point of view--the vantage point of a young child who knows both too much about his brother, his family, but also not nearly enough to understand why things are the way they are for them, for instance, or whether they'll be okay in the end, or even what differences "without Dean" would really mean. Because he says in that final line that things would be a lot different, without further specificity--where perhaps an adult narrative would be quite clear about the undebated negativity of said differences. But then that makes me think that perhaps it's not about age, not really, but honesty. Because to be in that kind of situation as an adult--obviously, it's not a good or a pleasant thing. But it can feel like any number of things across any number of moments. Which is hard to understand and hard to give voice to, I think. Anyway, that's what I imagine Sam tapping into (very unconsciously) here, and what I see working behind this snippet. Thanks so much for sharing!!!! Love this. <3

Awww, thank you! This was written a LONG time ago, but you're definitely right about it being not about age but about honesty. Sam's in his own head, he doesn't have to censor what he thinks for his dad or the doctors or other people, and he's honest with himself, about his feelings, in a way that he sadly can't be with anyone else. But I think you're right that there's a definite subtext there that it would be different in a bad way, but Sam doesn't necesaarily see it that way. He's young, and he's frustrated, and I think he has a right to feel that way.
