With
hoodie_time's
themed week starting tomorrow, I thought I'd unofficially wrap up last month's comment meme with a few recs. (Unofficially, because it is never too late to fill a prompt. ;D) In an effort not to simply rec basically the entire masterlist,
I figured I'd start by reccing the entire masterlist. Because really, I rec everyhing! Check out everything!
To help express the tremendous variation and experimentation of this meme's fills, however, I've highlighted a few pieces:
Home by
annonwriteGenre: Stanford!era alternate timeline
Characters: Dean, Sam, Jess
Pairing: Sam/Jess
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: ~1200
The gorgeous specificity of language, pristine dialogue, and understated--yet extremely evocative--tone of this piece really emphasizes each brief encounter between Dean, Sam, and Jess during Sam's time at Stanford. Each scene feels painfully delicate (in the best of ways), and yet, is undergirded by unmistakable love, security, a sense of 'home' you don't often expect, or find, in SPN.
How to Get Over a Broken Neck (and other advice for hunters with homicidal family members) by
i_speak_tongueGenre: 1x10 "Asylum" tag!fic, alternate timeline
Characters: Sam, Dean, OCs
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: ~3000
Immaculately situated in S1 canon (plot-wise as well as emotionally),
i_speak_tongue's fic excavates fresh ground alongside 1x10 "Asylum," which is particularly impressive given the massive corpus of excellent and variegated fanworks that have sprung from these same roots over the last nine years (!). A combination of deft character interactions and exquisite internal dialogue, this fic balances vulnerability, fear, and steady un-histrionic humanity in a way that makes me fall in love with Dean all over again.
Submerged by
ever_dimmingGenre: S4 hell/post-hell issues, outsider!POV
Characters: Dean, OCs, Sam
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: ~4700
There's a horizon to the speaker in this fic that stretches beyond the moment of her encounter with Dean, without diluting the intensity of the immediate narrative. And more than that, there's a horizon to the world into which that narrative intervenes. This is a fic with an ER that can't necessarily promise 24/7 supervision of one patient amongst many. Sure, it's a small detail, but it speaks to more than its face value; and this fic turns expertly on minutiae--from the taste of coffee to what the speaker does and does not see in Dean, to a dim smile of Sam's, which "must have been lovely once."
Inverse Exchange by
quadrant_of_skyGenre: sorry, cannot be quantified
Characters:Dean, Sam
Rating: PG
Word Count: ~1000
Total tonal immersion: This fic nails it. Dissociative, ephemeral--yet completely unyielding, and grounded in brief flashes of searing detail. I'm not sure it's something you read exactly; the words pass into you; it skips conscious cognitive processing and sublimate directly from prose into intense feeling.
He leaves them in each respective room, little notes with handwriting that betrays a new tremor. When Sam finds them, he is a rush of concern and Dean, you might have a concussion, and Look at me, but Dean just pushes him away.
"Stop, Sam." The other syllable doesn't come. Hitches in his throat, lodges there, and remains stuck as Dean forces out the rest. "I'm fine."
Hijacking by
agenttrojieGenre: 9x02 tag!fic
Characters: Dean, Abaddon, Sam
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: ~1100
A wonderful elaboration of Dean's headspace in 9x02 which outlines in a cogent and believable way what parts of Abaddon's threat Dean was reacting to, and how this reaction is informed by all of the canon that's preceded it. As for the final scene… I'll not be too explicit, but as a reader it leaves you with such a desperate sense of rupture--albeit a rupture cloaked in what Sam feels should be the greatest reassurance. Beautiful, beautiful mindfuck.
* And a bonus rec because
this fic is a parodic gem, even if the author refuses to acknowledge that it is a legitimate fill. :P It is absolutely the funniest thing I have ever read in my life, because it's everything silly about H/C and everything deeply satisfying and orgasmic about H/C, all in one fell swoop:
"I was ignoring you because I am the vessel of Satan and that makes me angry all the time. I am so sorry, please forgive me," he said quickly. […] "Also," Sam continued, "your stump got infected because you are a macho man and has been neglecting it like Dad has been neglecting you all your life. You went into a septic shock. Your fever reached 115°F and caused you brain damage. Thankfully, the doctors say you will make full recovery!"
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO REC YOUR FAVORITES, TOO! You can either link them here in the comments, or put together your own separate rec post. :)
Additionally everyone should ALSO DEFINITELY FEEL FREE to cross-post your fills to the main comm, too! Don't be shy--let the world see what we've wrought, nyeh heh heh heh. >:D
