Dean kicks at the crumbly brown leaves under his feet and sighs as he walks towards Sam. Finally, end of the day. He'd normally feel happier about it, but he just wants to curl up and watch cartoons or something and there's so much homework and he doesn't understand any of it. At least Sammy seems to be doing okay. Thriving even. Dean's not sure if he's most relieved, proud, or jealous.
Oh, who is he kidding, he's most jealous.
"Dean!" Sammy notices him suddenly and comes galloping over. "Look at what I got!" He holds up a piece of bright yellow construction paper in the shape of a star. Dean's brother is turning into a regular little geek. Okay then.
He smiles, pats Sam on the back, and quirks his eyebrow in a way that means, So how was the first day at your third ever school?
"It was good." Sammy says, bouncing on his toes. "I got a star and a new worksheet to do tonight!" he waves it happily, like it's a present. Dean rolls his eyes. It's matching shapes to their correspondents across the page. Sam will be through it in no time.
"And," Sam adds as they start walking away, "My teacher's name is Mrs. Applebaum! But she says to call her Mrs. Apple. And there's a girl in my class that talks like you."
Dean freezes. His tongue darts out quickly over his lips. Sam is watching him.
"R-really?" he says finally, trying to make it sound casual.
"Yeah." Sammy watches the ground and his feet for a while. He looks thoughtful, but Dean can't tell what he's thinking.
Dean watches Sam's feet too.
After a minute, Sam adds, "The other kids always tease her." He pauses again, and Dean feels like he's teetering on the edge of a very steep cliff, poised, all too ready to fall. He kicks another dead leaf to remind himself that he is on solid ground.
"Do they tease you too?" Sam asks, head tipping up to look at Dean's eyes.
Dean grunts. Sammy looks unhappy so he adds, "N-nah. I'm... t-too cool for an-anyth-th-thing but utter w-worship."
Sammy giggles.
"I didn't tease her though." he says, looking at Dean again seriously.
Dean ruffles Sam's hair lovingly.
"I'd never tease you either."
"Didin-int you h-hear me, S-sam? I-i d-don't g-get teas-s-sed." he says, and grimaces, wishing that had come out at least a little smoother. It's always worst when he wants it to be better most.
Sam nods seriously. "Even if you did though, I never would."
Dean swallows. "Thanks Sam, he wants to say, or maybe something even more ridiculous, but he knows right now it would take far too long to get it out. He settles instead for, "R-race you!"
He takes off, the cool wind rushing up against his face, Sam behind him shrieking something about unfairness, and Dean grins.

:DDDDDDDDD This was wonderful! I loved how Sam was wise beyond his years, and how Dean was very clearly affected by it, as much as he didn't want to show it. This was so believable. When I post "Makes Me Feel Fine" to my journal, I'm definitely going to link to this <3

So I finish wibbling over the original just in time to wibble over this. It's always these little realistic, family-centric interludes that get me...Hooray for sweet Sam. :)

Omg, you guys are all too awesome. The meme is breeding verses! <3333 The image of little Sam with a piece of yellow construction paper is too adorable, I can't even. And I too know the thrill of new worksheets. XDD Great fill (fill 2.0?)!!

It's really better not to talk.
