Viewing Habits

So, I was home with a sick kiddo a few days in the past week, which has allowed me time to catch up on some of my backlog of Tivo'd programs. Lately, instead of watching a couple of programs after the kids get to bed, I've just been heading straight to bed, so I have quite the collection stashed away. I generally lean towards sci-fi programming, science programs, and programs that promise something different, whether it be a different style of filming or different take or whatever. However, watching one show in particular this week really got me to thinking about what I watch, and why.

The show is "Pushing Daisies." The concept behind the show is that Ned can touch the dead and bring them back to life. If he touches them again, they're dead again forever. If he keeps something alive for more than one minute, something (or someone) else dies in its place. It's quirky. Interesting concept and ideas about what could you do with a "gift" like that. Pretty filming. Good acting. But I just don't like the show. Everything about it I like, but I just am not enjoying it, and I can't figure out why. I'll probably watch another episode or two before I give up on it, because maybe it just hasn't hooked me yet. I believe it's a good program, just not necessarily one for me.

Then there are shows that I shouldn't like, but do. Like "Bones." I really like the show - although it's formulaic, I can't stand the lead actress (or even her character, really) and it's a procedural, fercrissake. But I like the supporting cast and characters, and I'm somehow fascinated with the program. I think of shows like this as my guilty pleasures - the pulp novels I read between the good books. It's not good TV, but it's enjoyable to me.

So maybe that's how I should look at it - just as I can appreciate a book for being good without personally liking it, maybe I should just recognize that there are TV programs out there that I'm going to react to them same way.
