Things I am Excited for in 2012

Jan 04, 2012 17:05

My real life is essentially one big question mark at the moment, so I'm trying to look for concrete things to look forward to.

1. Damsels in Distress

Whit Stillman's newest film since 1998's "The Last Days of Disco". The man gives Terrence Malick a run for his money for most time spent in between features. I love a good comedy of manners and Stillman always delivers. Also, Adam Brody is still my favourite Gilmore Girls boyfriend (DAVE!) so I'm glad to see him back on screen.

2. Sydney Theatre Company's production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, March 2012

Reason #1 out of 1 000 000 why I would move to New York in a heartbeat: to watch as much THEATRE as possible

Reason #15 why I'm still in Sydney: Cheap tickets to the Sydney Theatre Company productions

One reason why I'm thankful to be still in Sydney is the Sydney Theatre Company. Being under 30 has meant that I have seen some AMAZING theatre at ridiculously cheap prices in ridiculously good seats. Cate Blanchett has broken my heart no less than three times as Richard II in The War of the Roses, Elena in Uncle Vanya and Blanche in Streetcar named desire. This year two of my favourite plays are coming into town: Pygmalion and Les Liaisons Dangereuses. The latter I'm particularly excited for since it will be starring one of my favourite Aussie actors Hugo Weaving and the amazing, terrifying Pamela Rabe.

3. Girls by Lena Dunham

I can't help it. This really looks like my kind of shit.

4. Belvoir Theatre's production of Private Lives with Toby Schmitz, September 2012

Toby Schmitz is my very favourite Australian actor currently working onstage largely because he is so much fun to watch! I saw him as a brilliant Tzara in Tom Stoppard's Travesties and fell in love. Needless to say I was ecstatic when he was cast as Benedick in Bell Shakespeare's production of Much Ado about Nothing- and was not disappointed. I'm so excited for him to play what I presume will be Eliot in Belvoir St Theatre's production of Private Lives. Private Lives is my favourite Noel Coward play and having been slightly underwhelmed by the recent Broadway production starring Paul Gross and Kim Catrall that I saw last November, I'm deeply interested to see what Toby Schmitz will do in the role. Belvoir is also such a tiny theatre so I'm v. excited to see the play in a much more intimate setting. Will be booking tickets months in advance.

5. The Hobbit

I'm not even a huge LOTR fan, but I'm excited for this. LOTR played such a formative part of my teen years, some of my fondest memories was hanging out with my friends to watch The Two Towers and The Return of the King in the cinemas, and in subsequent movie nights. But as a co-SHRALTP founder (see here to find out what SHRATLP is: http://issuu.com/claudielou/docs/shratlp), it is my duty to be most excited for Richard Armitage's first big screen role as Thorin. I never thought I would be so attracted to a beardy, hairy, dwarf- but stranger things have happened.
